Mashed potato - how to make it easily?

We all love mashed potato but the mashing it is a real pain, breaks your arm doing it and they are still lumpy?

Any brilliant suggestions?

Well tonight I'm having a cumberland sausage casserole (okay, I'm cheating it's a jar) with cheesy mash, carrots, broccoli and cauliflower. And I'm holding this thread ENTIRELY responsible

Incidentally - question for the Lakeland queens - gadgets for grating cheese - any decent ones out there?

I HATE grating cheese manually, but can't be arsed to drag the big food processor out, find the grating blades then wash the damn thing afterwards.

I seem to remember my mum used to have a rotary metal cheese grater thing that you pressed with one hand and rotated the drum with the other - but after a while it started dropping metal bits into the cheese which probably wasn't that healthy!!!

I've had a plastic version since, but that never seemed to work properly and I was forever getting an aching arm for having to press too hard and scraping compressed cheese off the drum inside.

Is there an easier way?!

I'm with you Countess, mashing is a doddle... this thread has indeed baffled me. But then, I find cleaning the cheese grater more work than actually grating the cheese...

I have a little scrub brush that came with the juicer, actually, does the cheese grater perfectly clean. But until I figured out the brush, I found it a real faff.

Now we have Nachos every weekend .

Can't believe this thread is still going !

We are having a potato free meal tonight (chicken stir fry) but I will be roasting some King Edwards tomorrow for dinner... (along with some beef & yorkshires of course!)

DD had cheesey mash for dinner last night but it smelt so good I almost ended up eating it myself!

Oh yes, meant to say, I bought a potato ricer from ikea a couple of years ago, don't know if they still do them though.

I also clean my ricer in the dishwasher. Seems to do a good job.

I don't use a ricer and my mash is fab. I use a masher and then whisk firmly with a wooden spoon to create light fluffy texture.
