I didnt like the look of the jamie olivers meal suggestion..............and I Wish I could spend a fiver on every family meal!!!

I make much cheaper meals than that most days!!!

Me too, Williamsmummy.
Guess it's slumming it for Jamie though?

choccypig · 23/04/2008 14:38

I think it's "feed them for a fiver" rather than just chopping up a five pound note on the plates. But really, I agree £5 is not exactly a cheap meal.

hecate · 23/04/2008 14:38

Yes. I don't like Jamie Oliver at all though, so that might be affecting me. I start to grind my teeth as soon as he appears.

MrsBadger · 23/04/2008 14:38

feed them for a fiver

(am liking the thought of just posting the note into a mouth though)

fwiw they inspired the tuna fishcakes we had last night, which were very good.

Nosnik · 23/04/2008 14:38

best meal, the only one ds 6 will eat without being hassled, pasta beans and grated cheese, approx price 30p per head, depending on what cheese you use!! also only takes 12 minutes to cook! ha Jamie, beat that!

Nosnik · 23/04/2008 14:40

If you want to be flash, chop up some onion and mix it in the beans before you heat them!

madamez · 23/04/2008 14:41

I had a go at the fishcakes and they weren't too bad (though a bit soggy but that may have been my fault) But most of the other suggestions look either revolting or how-stupid-do-you-think-we-are? ALso, what's with the almost total lack of seasoning in the recipies (not just no salt but no herbs, garlic, pepper, chilli...) Is it that poor people are supposed to regard food as fuel as part of Knowing Their Place or something?

CrackerOfNuts · 23/04/2008 14:41

I did the sausage and pasta meal from that site last night and it was yum.

oiFoiF · 23/04/2008 14:41

i was saying to dh its not difficult to cook a family meal for a fiver and whats the fuss?

but i suppose the fuss is people dont 'cook' anymore

Seasider · 23/04/2008 16:58

Am with Hecate on this Jammie (sic) Oliver makes me so bandwagon-jumping, derivative etc...

Dragonbutter · 23/04/2008 16:59

I agree. What i need to know is how to feed the family for a quid!
A fiver is easy.

I was just thinking that £5 is a hell of a lot to spend on a meal

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/04/2008 17:21

my meatballs and pasta cost about £3.50 (very)ish I'm guessing for 3 little pigs. -
£1.50 for mince.
breadcrumbs are made from ends of bread that nobody eats here - whizzed up and frozen.
half an onion, (15p?)
squirt of tom puree, sprinkle herbs and
one egg (20p?)

sauce - half an aubergine, one courgette, and tin of toms bit of onion clove of garlic and some dried herbs (dunno how much that would cost!?) but no more than £1

spaghetti - dunno 50p?

Dropdeadfred · 23/04/2008 17:22

are you serious? £5 alot to feed how many?

LazyLinePainterJane · 23/04/2008 17:25

That's £4.50 to feed Oliver's massive mouth and 50p for the other 43 children at the table

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 23/04/2008 17:49

£5? And this is supposed to be a good deal? For that money, you can be poncey...

Waitrose Organic meatballs 20 for £2.59 (or 500g organic mince for £2.24)
Waitrose Organic tinned tomatoes - 65p
Waitrose Organic Tomato puree - 45p
Organic 2 x carrots, 1 onion & celery stick - about 48p and much nicer than bloody peas.
Waitrose Organic Spaghetti - 56p

TOTAL £4.73

And you could spend the other 27p on parmesan shavings from the cheese counter.

goingfor3 · 23/04/2008 17:56

LOL at the thought of asking for 27p worth of parmasean shavings at the cheese counter!!!

madamez · 23/04/2008 22:55

Well, yeah (Ok the 'family' consists of me and DS but we like to eat) the tuna fishcakes one... SOme spuds, about 50p, broccoli 40p, tin of tuna 99p spring onion bundle 50p. Handful of sweetcorn (we skipped the carrots because neither of us are that keen on carrots) about 30p if that... total 2.79-ish even adding in milk and butter to make the mash nice, and a bit of flour wouldn't put it above £3. And if I was making it for 4 people a few more spuds would barely push it to £3.50. SO I think the 'for a fiver' bit probably includes the fact that some people will have to go out and buy flour and cooking oil because they never hear of such things..

Flibbertyjibbet · 23/04/2008 23:01

I was going to start a thread on this subject - every night since I saw that ad I find my self adding up the cost of the meal as I'm cooking it and its never been as much as a fiver yet! Including pudding!

Yes lets have a 'feed a family for a quid' thread.

That's easy 2 tins of value beans and a few slices of toast
(And thats on my menu plan list for this week not a joke)

Cappuccino · 23/04/2008 23:03

there's a thread on the moneysavingexpert forum where they have to come up with 3 courses for a fiver

they do it no problem
