Best dish you've eaten from an 'unusual' country?

Pyroleus · 10/10/2024 08:52

Unusual is not the right word! But I mean that we're all familiar with lots of dishes from Italy, India, Mexico, and so on. But what about Bangladesh? Tuvalu? Trinidad and Tobago?

Hit me with the tastiest dish that the average British person won't have heard of! Extra points for a link to a reliable recipe. Preferably without a vital ingredient which is only grown in southern Patagonia and definitely not available in Tesco.

Ok so maybe not the most unusual country, but çilbir, or Turkish eggs - absolutely stunning.

Extra thick Greek yoghurt, add a little salt, grate half a clove of garlic in and spread out a layer in a bowl. Poach 2 eggs til runny but set, and in the meantime, melt some butter in another pan and add: 1tsp Aleppo chilli flakes, 1/3 tsp smoked paprika, 1/2 tsp cumin, salt and pepper.

Set the eggs on top of the yoghurt and spoon over the hot butter. Can top with chopped dill if you have it. Best served with a thick piece of sourdough toast to sop up the lovely, yoghurty, spicy eggs.

Samsa (Kyrgyz). All sorts of
varieties, but my favourite is spiced squash. This recipe uses bought puff for ease, but it should be a bit more bread-bun like.

Ganach lupia (armenian beans). This recipe is the nearest to mine, but add Worcestershire sauce or mushroom ketchup instead of anchovies.

Kibbeh from the Jordan/Syria/Lebanon area. Loads of different approaches to making it, including raw like steak tartare. My easiest one is a tray bake version like this: https://maureenabood.com/baked-kibbeh-you-say-meatloaf-i-say-meatlove/

Lebanese Baked Kibbeh - Maureen Abood

Baked Kibbeh (kibby, kubba, kibbi) is a beloved Lebanese tradition of meat, cracked wheat, spices, and often pine nuts.

Not an unusual or far flung country but one that Brits don't really seem to have adopted the dishes of, Portugal or more specifically Madeira.

Sorry, it's one of those food blogs with 500 words about how they came across the dish before you actually get to the recipe, but I love Beef Picadinho. The recipe suggests serving with rice but the Portuguese restaurants and takeaways around us usually offer a choice of chips, rice, milho or all three. My preference is milho (a kind of corn bread).

Not exactly unusual countries and no links but a chickpea and potato thing I had at an Agriturismo restaurant in Sardinia. Tried to google in afterwards but none the wiser.

The puffy fried dough (a bit like a puffy pizza) in Budapest with garlic sour cream and grated cheese on top .

I am regularly making a dish I had in Gambia, called sosso beans, it's simple but so yummy and quick to make.
Basically - chop and saute a large onion in a little oil, add couple of chopped garlic cloves. Add a tin of black eyed beans, drained. Crumble in a stock cube, add a teaspoon of cumin, season with salt and pepper, and stir in a tablespoon of tomato puree. Add a small amount of water, maybe couple of tablespoons. Heat through for a couple of minutes while giving a stir. And that's it! You can use them like you would use baked beans, and they are far nicer than baked beans! I love them with a slice of toast and a fried egg. Yum.

Sri Lankan kottu. It's a dish made with chopped roti (flatbread), meat/fish/paneer, eggs and spices. Drizzled with a minty yogurt. I guess a similar idea to a fried rice.

We're lucky to have a Sri Lankan food van locally that pops up at lots of events that makes this. We'll go to things they're at just to get a bowl of kottu!

@AdaColeman
Love Pierogies but also love Chlodnik - a cold beet soup. Had it one stinking hot day in the Polish centre cafe near me. Gorgeous!

Icannotremembermyusername · 11/10/2024 16:09

In Vietnam I had egg coffee! It was lovely like coffee crème brûlée type egg nog thing. My DH flatly refused !!! Said it wasn’t right! But I loved it

Deathraystare · 11/10/2024 16:10

@OldTinHat

Brik? sort of filo pastry with a whole egg in it? Had that in a beach cafe in Tunisia. Lovely!

Deathraystare · 11/10/2024 16:11

@Icannotremembermyusername
I remember that!

Pallisers · 11/10/2024 16:12

There is a fabulous Afghanistan restaurant near us - lovely flatbreads, spiced stews etc.

Also love ethiopian.

Deathraystare · 11/10/2024 16:13

Love Dosas!

When I was in Tunisia years ago, I had a really tasty dish with an egg in it.

I can't remember what it was called, what else was in it, but it was really good. Best contribution I can make to this thread, I'm afraid 😆

Brick a l’oeuf maybe

dinglehopperandwhatnot · 13/10/2024 19:21

Chilaquiles Rojos

We had it in bacalar in Mexico. Had it in lots of other restaurants in tulum and it just wasn't the same, this one place nailed it. Best breakfast

Oh yes! I'm a great fan of chilled soups, vichyssoise and Greek egg and lemon for example!

WetBandits · 13/10/2024 19:56

Trinidadian buss up shut roti; the messier it looks on the plate, the better it tastes!

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 13/10/2024 20:04

When I was in Poland we ate cabbage and mushroom crepes which had been rolled up and fried in breadcrumbs, served with the most delicious beetroot soup.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 13/10/2024 20:05

Oh and I also love Sri Lankan kottu rotti.

BobbyBiscuits · 13/10/2024 20:05

Laab/p (sp?) when I was in Cambodia, or was it Laos? I think it's common across that region but I'd not tried it before. Been travelling for a few weeks and we arrived after a massive journey lying on the floor of a Mekong boat. We got to the place and these Americans were like, hey, try this...I couldn't believe I hadn't had it before, and it tasted amazing. Probably partly as I'd eaten nothing for at least 20 hours before!
It's ground pork with chillis, herbs and garlic and stuff but not sure the exact recipe.

It’s Egganchipz.

WeWillGetThereInTheEnd · 13/10/2024 20:12

Caramelised potatoes in China. Potatoes are not unusual in the UK; but I’d never had a potato dish that was sweet - best thing I ate in China imo (and I love Chinese food)!

I had Ethiopian food in Dubai and didn’t like it at all; but Umm Ali (sp ?), a sweet bread dessert from Egypt in Muscat was a revelation!

Blackcurrant pierogies in Zakopane were fantastic!

CuriousMummyy · 13/10/2024 21:07

Pakistani nihari is absolutely mouth-wateringly delicious. You've got to have it with naan. I'd say order it from a good restaurant, it takes ages to make. But omg my mouth is watering at the thought of it 🤤

Senegalese Chicken Yassa v tasty
https://louskitchencorner.freybors.com/2022/10/30/chicken-yassa/

Agree African dishes are great for trying new things. I try and go to any African restaurants that I can Smile
Definitely planning a visit to Bristol asap (as assuming that would be the best place in the UK for this)

I made this this weekend and it tasted amazing!

Looking forward to trying some other suggestions from this thread
