Finger food from Pakistan....by tomorrow!

DC's school are focussing on Pakistan this term, and have been asked to bring in some food which represents the country tomorrow. 😅

Help?!

Any ideas for some portable, nut free, school friendly, food which doesn't require any special ingredients (working today so very limited time to shop, basically just my small local supermarket), and simple enough to cook with DC tonight?

Samosas?

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 02/10/2024 12:21

Make roti.

Two ingredients: wholemeal flour and cold water.

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g thank you! I suggested that too! But DH said 'aren't they more Indian food?' and I'm honestly not sure?

@ItsVeryHyacinthBucket that sounds like the right level of effort!! Thank you :D

I know nothing about food that is specifically Pakistani except what I've just gleaned from looking at this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pakistani_cuisine and it does mention samosas. TBH, if they've given you this little notice they'll be lucky to get anything at all!

Have they asked you to cook it? Quite a tall order, if so!

okayhescereal · 02/10/2024 12:34

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g school has text 'tomorrow we'll be learning all about Pakistan.....donations of Pakistani food are very welcome'. So, not compulsory by any stretch. However my experience so far is there are usually only a couple of families per class who participate in this sort of thing, and we're one of them. So just thought if there was something on the easy side we could offer then would have a go! If it's too tricky then we'll join the majority who don't 😅

Pakistan used to be part of India. They do eat samosas as well!

okayhescereal · 02/10/2024 12:38

Thanks for the replies all, love the hive mind when mine isn't functioning!!

Will get some golden delicious based on @zzplex 's suggestion, maybe some dates if we can find some and cook a roti later.

Blooming love a samosa but I remember trying to cook them in the pandemic and it wasn't a quick task. There is a place near here that makes them, and they're DELICIOUS, but super spicy so feel like they might be wasted on most 5 year olds I know 😋

@Yuckyyuckyuckity That's good info, thank you :D hopefully by the end of this term I'll be so much more knowledgable about the place!

Mangoes. Chillis. Chickpeas.

DiscoBeat · 02/10/2024 12:43

Make some cookies (think they are Nan Koti or something similar, I made them years ago). They're very nice and easy to make.

Yuckyyuckyuckity · 02/10/2024 12:48

You could just go to the world food aisle of your nearest big supermarket and get some snacks like Bombay mix (OK technically Indian but you get other mixes that aren't 'Bombay', Cofresh crisps which are delicious and cheap, etc). Tbh Pakistani and North Indian cuisine is very similar so don't worry too much of it's not specifically 'Pakistani'!

Most people dont realise the majority of typical 'Indian' curry houses in the UK are actually Bangladeshi lol.

Deathraystare · 02/10/2024 16:41

It does seem to be meat heavy.

okayhescereal · 02/10/2024 17:00

All sorted!! Thanks for the replies :D Bought some apples and about to make some roti/chapati!
