Fondant icing and buttercream

Is there a way to use fondant icing to make buttercream? Just asking as I've a lot of the former, but find the latter easier to work with.

no, i don't think that could work
fondant icing is far too sweet imo

I don't see why you couldn't use fondant icing powder to make buttercream? Just perhaps a bit of lemon juice or if you're flavouring it another way just double taste test!

if fondant icing powder=icing sugar
yes I suppose you could use it for buttercream

If you mean ready-made fondant icing that's ready to roll, then I don't see how you could incorporate butter into that to make buttercream. It's too stiff to be able to go into a mixer or use a hand mixer with, and even if you could, I can't see how softened butter would mix into it. It would just not combine I think.

Maybe, you could try gently warming the fondant and then adding warm/hot water to make it runny, and then see what happens if you slowly add that to beaten softened butter. Would be a total experiment though!

Not if it's ready made ready to roll fondant, it can however be melted down a bit as suggested above with a little water in a double boiler to pourable fondant, this is actually what is on things like fondant fancies or on flaky pastry custard slice type things. Puff pastry slices filled with cream and topped with coffee fondant icing are one of my favourite things, you just melt it a bit with some coffee rather than water.

If it's fondant sugar only, which is used to make the same as above i.e. pourable fondant then it's close enough to icing sugar and could be used in buttercream.

Fondant will freeze if you think you have any further use for it. You can use it for modelling decorations if you have any use for them, Christmas thingies for decorating cakes/cupcakes?

I actually don't mind fondant on a cake but most, in fact practically all people put it on too thick! A very thin layer is fine over buttercream or ganache and good if you want a particular look that is best done with fondant.

It's ready made fondant icing. I was hoping I could "convert" it but looks like that's going to be difficult.
I don't want to mess about with it as an experiment as I've bought a fairly niche colour to use for something. Although perhaps I could have a go, and just replace it if it all goes horribly wrong.

You'd only need a small amount to try out with, not the whole lot.

TeabySea · 19/09/2024 11:48

I tried mixing a small amount into some plain buttercream and adding a dash of milk and it's now more like sort of royal icing. I've spread some onto a bit of bread (as a sub for the cake) to see if it'll do the job, be great if it does, although the initial prep might be a bit fiddly.

So basically you have created pouring fondant which is like a thick royal icing 😊, you're never going to get buttercream consistency because of the additives in the fondant designed to give it the texture it has.

just make the buttercream!!!!
