Family dinners that can be compiled at the table

WWGD · 18/09/2024 11:17

We are all quite fussy, me included, and I am okay with that. So family dinners that work best for us and compile it yourself things where we can all leave out what we don't want. Eg fajitas where the salad and meat and sauce components are separate. Spaghetti and meatballs where the pasta and cheese and sauce and salad is all separate. Or a roast dinner wehre it is all served on platters.
Can anyone recommend more of this kind of thing - I am struggling to think of new ones.

Chilli - you can do a bunch of sides like rice, grated cheese, sour cream, tortilla chips, guacamole, salsa

Georgie743 · 18/09/2024 11:23

Bbq or a bbq style meal with different proteins and sides served in the middle to pick what you like.

Wraps different fillings to build your own.

WWGD · 18/09/2024 11:23

Oh yes, I'm doing that today in fact. Juyst forgot to add it in original post. I don't think the kids would eat the chilli but they like rice and the sides. (And I wouldn't have the rice as am trying to low carb - hahaha, I am as much a part of the problem as anyone else)

We are a family of vegetarians and meateaters, people who avoid carbs and people who love them. So we eat a lot like this!

Pita bread with all kinds of filling: meat, veggies, sauce, cheese.
Plain tomatosoup and you can add extra veggies, egg, cheese, build your own minestrone.
Hamburger: with all kinds of toppings and sauces and veggies/salad and bread
Rice: with veggies/meat/sauce/egg all kind of toppings

You could do greek style kebabs with pork, chicken and vegetable skewers. Maybe some griddled halloumi? Then make a lentil and beetroot salad, some bean salad, hummus, tarama, tzatziki, carrot and cucumber sticks, feta, olives and pitta bread.
Of course you wouldn't need all that stuff all at once if you were pressed for time.

fortheveryfirsttime · 18/09/2024 11:28

Tapas stuff like meatballs, tortilla, patatas bravas, roasted peppers etc and lots of bread for the juices.

Tacos
Fajitas

You can do these as
Meat (chicken/mince)
Veg (peppers, onions etc)
Wraps/taco shells
Salad
Sour cream/guac etc

If you're low carbing then pile all the fillings onto a salad and add the toppings

Acunningruse · 18/09/2024 11:42

I was going to suggest fajitas, its the ideal for this!

How about a soup, with sides such as baguettes and a cheeseboard, maybe with some charcuterie?

When mine had playdates when they were little I did a big bowl of pasta with a range of toppings eg pesto, tuna mayo, cheese, bacon, tomato sauce. Could also make your own pizzas but I realise not v good for low carbing!

Chicken breasts, potato wedges and extras eg cheese, sauce, vcariety of veg or salad?

WWGD · 18/09/2024 12:25

Oh some great ideas here already - thank you!

What about Vietnamese rice paper rolls? Quite different to what’s been suggested above, theyre super easy to assemble. You just dip the paper rolls into warm water, put the toppings in and roll. Very easy and can add plenty of vege! I’ve seen the rice paper at big tescos and Sainsburys

Pulled pork, with bbq sauce separate, burger buns or jacket potatoes, separate coleslaw and salad.

NorthantsNewbie · 18/09/2024 12:36

Ramen bowls? Big stock pot with broth in, and then noodles and veg (either cooked in the broth if hot enough after serving, or I suppose you could pre-cook them?).

Jacket potatoes and assorted fillings?

Do you literally put everything into serving bowls? Or just put the pans on the table? I was musing the other day about how often in films everything is put into serving bowls and thought what a faff it would be to have to wash them up in addition to everything else.

EngineEngineNumber9 · 18/09/2024 12:37

Crispy duck pancakes. Pancakes, duck, cucumber, spring onion, plum sauce. Can add other veggies depending on what everyone likes.

CocoapuffPuff · 18/09/2024 12:42

Picnic type tea!

Bread or rolls or crackers
Cheese cubes in a bowl
Cold meats, pork pies
Pickles
Scotch eggs or hardboiled eggs
Different salads
cherry tomatoes, carrot sticks, etc

Curry night:
One or two different curries, maybe a veg and chicken option
Bowl of rice or basket of mini naans
Toppings - bowl of salted peanuts, bowl of raisins, bowl of sliced orange (truly, has to be tried with curry, it's amazing), mango chutney, yogurt, raita, etc

Pizza:
Buy ready made pizza bases and have a bowl of tomato sauce to spread over, then everyone can add whatever toppings you have available that they want on their own pizza.
Bowl of salads on table

Wraps with different filling options

Make your own sushi - wouldn't appeal to me but lots of kids I know absolutely love sushi

Jacket potatoes

puppyparent · 18/09/2024 12:44

I serve most meals this way - the various components of the meal (eg meat, potatoes, veg, dressing) are placed in the centre of the table in separate serving dishes. People just help themselves to whatever items they want depending on how hungry they are / what they fancy.

Depends how hot the dishes are. I decant into serving dish if they are going to burn themselves reaching across the table but not otherwise.

All day breakfast
Sausages, mash, veg, gravy, Yorkshire puddings
Pasta, garlic butter, grilled chicken, sweetcorn, broccoli, crunchy breadcrumbs to sprinkle on top
Breaded chicken, rice or rice noodles, tenderstem broccoli, green beans, Katsu sauce.
Chicken tikka pieces, rice, chickpea curry, popadoms

ColouringPencils · 18/09/2024 13:04

Roast veg, warm or cold (eg peppers, red onion, courgettes, aubergine- depends how fussy), lentils, feta, houmous, couscous, chopped herb salad, pita bread. Usually add a bit of spice eg jalapeños or chilli sauce and a bit of cool with a yoghurt dip. I eat all of this, other family members choose the bits they like.
