Reducing UPFs - breakfast!

JumpstartMondays · 08/09/2024 21:41

Trying to reduce our UPFs as a family and next we are tackling breakfast cereals.

What do you have for your breakfasts that is low in UPF?

We have porridge - which I don’t think is upf.
alternatives could be eggs or fruit ?

Fruitypatootie · 08/09/2024 21:53

I have a high protein plain yoghurt with mixed nuts and seeds and raspberries. It fills me up for longer than a breakfast cereal does but I don’t love it. It’s easy to prep and eat though.

Also doing the same!
Toast (home made bread) with dippy or scrambled eggs is the DCs' favourite.
Avocado toast.
Porridge as PP suggested.
Cereals vary massively in how ultra processed they are, some are ok.
Plain yoghurt and fruit (again, some yoghurts are ok, some aren't).

I make overnight oats with milk milled seeds and a dollop of Greek yoghurt and some fruit . Kids have porridge granola or peanut butter toast

tealandteal · 08/09/2024 21:57

I usually have an apple chopped up with Greek yogurt and some flax seeds. Try baked yogurt which is eggs mixed with yogurt and berries and baked in the oven, quite like a cheesecake.

Boiled eggs, fried eggs, scrambled, omelette
minty pea purée on sourdough toast
avocado on sourdough
Smoothie bowl made with milk and frozen forest berry mix
greek yoghurt with frozen cherries and honey with a bit of homemade granola
smoked salmon and scrambled egg
Swedish vafflor

loads more things as I really like making brekkie but these are weekday staples

JumpstartMondays · 08/09/2024 21:58

We have Weetabix and porridge.

We had shreddies and granola and raisin wheats up until recently but have ditched them for UPFs.

The trouble with eggs for breakfast is having time to actually cook them in the morning!

Muesli (not the dusty kind with added milk powder/sugar) with fruit and plain natural yoghurt. Or homemade sourdough toast, but I appreciate that is quite high effort.

poppyzbrite4 · 08/09/2024 21:58

Oats, blueberries and banana, every day.

StiffyByngsDogBartholomew · 08/09/2024 21:58

Dd likes cold, hard boiled eggs so I cook half a dozen in advance for lunches etc

Yeah that does sound quite high effort but delicious though!

We've got 2 children 1yo and 3yo so mornings are super busy getting us all ready and delivered to our respective places of work and play!

Breakfast here tends to be one of the following
Greek yogurt with berries, fresh or frozen, some walnuts or cashews.
Sourdough toasted with poached egg or avocado
Overnight oats
Scrambled egg with mushroom and tomato
Omelette
Savory muffins.
Porridge with honey and berries

I buy either Jason's brand bread from the supermarket or bakery bread.

Overnight oats are a good suggestion, I'd totally forgotten about doing those! 👌

Surely eggs don’t take longer to cook than porridge? Particularly if you’re doing something like omelette.

Eggs literally take a few mins, s rambled can be on the plate in less than3 mins from putting them in the pan.

Dandeliontea123 · 08/09/2024 22:04

Shredded Wheat is apparently UPF-free.

We only do porridge at weekends when we have time

I also hard boil a dozen eggs and keep them in the fridge. They are great for a quick snack or breakfast on the move.

haggisaggis · 08/09/2024 22:07

What we call ‘American scrambled eggs’ is really quick. You just cook some beaten eggs in oil or butter in a frying pan and fry quickly while stirring until cooked. Cooks in a couple of minutes. I like it with a homemade salsa - tomato, onuon and a bit of chilli - that can be made in advance. Porridge I cook in the instant pot on timer so it’s ready when we wake up.

With a 1yo eating my elbow and a 3yo clinging to my leg they would take a lot longer than 3min

I make mini pancakes sometimes (drop scones, not crepes)

I egg, tablespoon Greek yogurt, bit of flour, bit of vanilla essence, mashed banana or couple tsp sugar. Whisk up together.

Cooked in butter and drizzled with honey or strawberries (or bonne maman chocolate hazelnut spread which is mild UPF, lol) they are v nice for the kids. DD takes them in her lunchbox sometimes too.

ScribblingPixie · 08/09/2024 22:11

I have a rice maker with a porridge setting so use that, sometimes with different grains so oats, rice, buckwheat, quinoa. With banana, tahini and dates usually, sometimes berries and greek yogurt.

Annielou67 · 08/09/2024 22:24

Im another porridge fan. Home made muesli. Spanish type omelette with potato, onion, tomato, cheese. Cheese on sourdough. Cheese in milk. Eggy bread. ( non upf bread obvs) ( good for stale homemade bread). Pancakes.

fruitpastille · 08/09/2024 22:25

Aldi sourdough is OK. You could have with peanut butter or homemade jam.
Weetabix isn't too bad. Add sliced banana?
Porridge in the pan with milk left on the hob overnight - takes very little time to cook in the morning.
I often put smoothie ingredients ready in the nutribullet the night before and blitz in the morning. Greek yog with fruit/spinach/honey/oats/whatever. I prefer it as a drink.

Perfectlystill · 08/09/2024 22:28

Yoghurt plus a mix of nuts/seeds/dried fruit I make myself and keep in a Tupperware.
