Smoothie recipes - healthy-ish

DS(9) is a fussy eater and has been increasingly refusing fruit, so the dietitian suggested making smoothies.

I make him a fresh strawberry, Arla Big Milk (dietician approved) smoothie with a drop of vanilla essence or 0.5 tsp honey or agave to counter any tartness which he likes.

So I’m looking for any fruit/vege based healthy-as-possible but still palatable smoothie ideas please. Ingredients do need to be able to be blended well with no distinguishable lumps of fruit or veg.

I once tried a recipe that included cauliflower which claimed it couldn’t be detected and it was foul!

I used to do these for the DC sometimes when they got in from school although I replaced the honey with banana for sweetness. So Milk, Half to a full banana depending on if you're drinking one too, then a handful of berries, any will do or some mango. You can get frozen berries and frozen mango which don't n ed defrosting before blending.

The DC must have liked them as they're adults now and still make them for themselves sometimes Wink

This is more of a breakfast in themselves because they contain oats. Recipe works fine without oats and it's just the right sweetness.

Avocado is an excellent indistinguishable ingredient in a fruit smoothie. Gives it a lovely smooth texture too.

Peanut butter also a good addition.

You could used tinned fruits like peaches and mangos - they blend down very easily and smoothly.

I do milk, banana, avocado, spinach and peanut butter. I also add a bit of protein powder, but that's probbaly not necessary in your son's case.

You dont really taste the avocado or spinach, sometimes I add frozen raspberries if I have them in, instead of the peanut butter.

We use banana to sweeten berry smoothies. So mixed frozen berries (or just fresh/frozen berries), banana and then I add some oat milk or yoghurt (depending on if it needs to be dairy free) and some apple juice. I always add linseeds and sometimes add oats to make it a bit more subsstantial if it's a breakfast replacement.

Mango and pineapple with a little bit of lime and ginger is nice. Use some orange juice to get it to the consistency you like (and ditch the lime/ginger if he doesn't like it).

Banana chocolate/peanut butter smoothies can be nice but I haven't had one in years. I think we used to do milk with banana and peanut butter and/or cocoa powder? YOu might have to experiment with that a bit. Definitely get the cocao powder mixed first before attempting to blend it (now that I'm thinking about it, I thinkwe might have used nesquick? This was as a child).
