Kitchen scales

I've gone through three Salter digital kitchen scales in the last 15 years. They randomly stop working or won't turn off. I thought Salter was a well-regarded brand which is why I kept buying them. Any suggestions for a replacement?

I've got Accuweight. Can't be sure, but they are at least 10 years old

Mine was from that brilliant shop called Tschibo that sold different items every week like the middle aisle of Lidl or Aldi

It's lasted me years over 10 at least

Although I did have to re glue the glass plate on once

I've just bought a pair of OXO ones (the display pulls out to allow for large bowls and pans) as had the same problem - they were expensive but come with a lifetime guarantee and are very accurate!

I make do with our old fashioned balance scales and imperial weights, also Salter, inherited froma deceased relative.

It can be a faff converting metric amounts into imperial and then making up that amount using 1/4, 1/2, 1 oz, 2oz weights, but it works.

Buy a set of metric weights.

I've had a Salter dual platform one for many years, can't remember how many. Went through a few of the touch panel type which all eventually stopped working, prefer actual buttons you can press and rechargable batteries too.

BlackForestCake · 01/09/2024 09:02

Yes, touch panels aren't good on things that get flour and water on them. One that ran on rechargeables would be great, the round lithium button cells don't last long and there isn't a rechargeable version of them.

I came on to recommend my scales, which I bought after I too got fed up of replacing Salter scales but then found that they don’t make them anymore. They are battery free and the brand was call fig and pickle. The closest that I can find are these which also run on kinetic energy.

I've gone back to non- digital (acoustic? 😆) scales for this reason. No problems.

roses2 · 02/09/2024 13:34

Following as my Salter scales just broke after 15 years. Bought two from Amazon but they aren't accurate and fluctuate a lot.

Any recommendations for AA/AAA or plug in scales?

IdLikeToBeAFraser · 02/09/2024 14:03

Somewhat to my astonishment, I've had the same scales for almost 20 years - they are weight watchers scales. I've never used the weight watcher stuff, just the actual weighing bit. It's survived all kinds of kitchen disasters - just needs battery replacement every few years!

goneaway2 · 20/09/2024 22:46

Joseph Joseph Shell scales. Had mine ten years now and they are great for pouring out.

BirthdayRainbow · 20/09/2024 22:47

Same. I got one as a gift 15 years ago and have only had to change the battery once thus far! Fab scales.

So have I, but a mere 8 years old.

ConstanceMartensCat · 04/08/2025 22:50

Mine is 20 years old from Ikea and still going strong!

I’ve heard good things about Heston Blumenthal’s precision scales
