Buffet Ideas?

Hi all,

Family funeral on Wednesday and our planned caterer has let us down so I've had to rush and find another at the last minute to provide something basic which includes..

  • assortment of sandwiches & wraps
  • sausage rolls
  • Quiche
  • Crisps
  • Chocolate Cake & Old School Cake.

It doesn't seem a lot of variety for the price but there's not much else we can do at this stage.

Just to give abit more variety to the choices, What would you like to see in a buffet or would add?

TIA

A cheeseboard
salads
Fruit salad
samosas always tend to go down well and great to order last minute

I'd add some chipolatas, cherry tomatoes, tortilla chips and sticks of cucumber/celery/carrot/peppers with a range of dips. (hummus, salsa, sour cream etc) Also perhaps some melon slices or other fruit.

This, and add salad to the sandwich fillings to break up the beige.

For a funeral I’d stick to sandwiches & wraps, or some filled rolls, a good old sausage rolls & Morrisons do boxes of mixed mini pies, they’re delicious and take 10min to heat. What about a slow cooker of soup?

LemonadePockets · 25/08/2024 17:46

in the unlikely event you’re in Glasgow, message me.

We've used Costco for sandwich platters before and they were really nice.

I agree some green stuff, crudité, Cherry toms, leaves

We used Waitrose for the one I catered for. Sandwiches, wraps, sausage rolls, cheese and onion rolls, cake and fruit platters. All delivered on the day. Any extra bits from M&S, Tesco etc

MissPearlPratt · 25/08/2024 18:26

Edited to say - I also did a cheese board.

To be honest - whatever you choose - as long as there's plenty, it will be fine x

I'm sorry for your loss Flowers
How many are you roughly catering for? Are there any facilities to heat food up, or will it all need to be cold? Do you have enough fridge space?
For costco, you can get an online account for £15. services.costco.co.uk/deli/
Costco, M&S and Morrisons all do sandwich platters. You could also buy sausage rolls and quiches from these places- if you have anyone that could help, rather than paying a catering company.
I was going suggest chicken drumsticks, with a foil or paper on the handle part. Not sure how they'd go cold though and might be a PITA with bones.

We don't really have a set number of people to know how much or little to cater for but close family and friend wise I'd say about 20 people max, the rest would just be those that turned up to show respect or regular pub users at the wake.

Everyone we know will be in attendance at the funeral so would likely be a rush if we relied on someone we new to provide the catering or to chip in with the helping. I would of done it myself as I live close to the location of the wake but I've just had a baby so would be putting extra unnecessary pressure on myself.

So anything quick and easy to add to what's already being catered would be ideal. Like oven stuff, dippers, pizzas, cheese but I agree in trying to make it less beige but other than fruit or salad I'm nit sure how we would be able to do that.

That selection sounds fine for a funeral...I don't think you need anything else. Just make sure there's plenty of what you do have.... people eat way more than you think

RosesAndHellebores · 25/08/2024 22:11

I'm sorry for your loss.

On cocktail sticks, cherry tomato, black olive, mozzarella pearl and a basil leaf.

Grilled red onion, pepper, courgette slice, mushroom on cocktail sticks as above.

Tray of cocktail sausages, Mustard and ketchup in ramekins in the centre of a big plate.

Fruit platter: melon, pineapple, mango, strawberries and grapes.

Diversion · 25/08/2024 22:13

I presume that as you are posting that this is a relative. You have posted that you have just had a baby too. Please do not stress yourself out about catering for a wake. The food which you have mentioned is fine without having to add to it. It is a funeral not a wedding or christening and it does not matter if the portions are small or if it is beige. Please take care of yourself and your family.

SausageinaBun · 25/08/2024 22:27

I'd leave it as what the caterer is providing. If you put yourself in the position of one of the other people attending the funeral, would you be thinking "if only they'd done a cheeseboard" or would you be thinking about the funeral and other mourners?

ClipTap · 25/08/2024 22:33

Just stick to the basics as in your OP

It's a funeral no one's going to be analysing the Buffet unless they're complete monsters
