sunflowervalley · 16/04/2008 13:38

My DD will be 5 in May and am planning a party at home.

Ideas please for party food.

Would like to make a few different things not too complicated but something fun.

Anyone have any ideas to share please?

Do you want to do healthy or "mum's gone to Iceland"?

hana · 16/04/2008 14:00

strawberries
grapes
mini breadsticks
sandwiches cut into quarters - you could jazz them up and cut in heart shapes or circles
cheezies
carrot sticks
cucumbers

ritz crackers

We've just done ds's 3rd bday at home. Weather not great. We did DIY pizzas, ice your own gingerbread man and decorate your own bun. Also had cherry toms, cucumber, sandwiches jelly and birthday cake. 5yo that came seemed to enjoy it too.

sunflowervalley · 16/04/2008 14:13

Trying for healthy really, would like to make an effort and make a few things myself.

Shaped sandwiches sound good as children always seem to leave the crusts.

Love the idea of icing your own gingerbread man.
Where would I get icing bits and pieces to do this please?

I've got pampered chef icing bottles which are great for small hands - which meant I just mixed my own icing, split it into three and coloured two lots with 'natural' food colouring (!). (Let me know if you want some - can get them for you!). I also bought some sprinkles type things which were really meant for the buns but some got used on the gingerbreads as well.

Much interest in eating their own pizzas and the gingerbreads.

hana · 16/04/2008 15:22

you could just make your own icing and then use sandwich bags for each child to use. or just give them a small spoon and little bowl with the icing. I wouldn't go buying in special things tbh

uptomyeyes · 16/04/2008 15:38

Split toasting muffins for a pizza base for each child, rather than mess around trying ot make your own.

Put cocktail sausages in an ovenproof bowl. Scoop half a jar of sweet mango chutney over them. Heat up in the oven so that the chutney melts and the sausages warm through. Cool enough so that the children can eat them. Lovely and juicy.

Only bring the cakes/gingerbreads out after the savourys have been eaten.

our big hit has been using cookie cutters to cut out the sandwiches. ds had a pirate party for his 4th so we had pirate ships and fish cutters (also used for biscuits which the kids decorated on arrival). This year it's a dinosaur theme and I've ordered dino cutters.

other than that I do wee sausages, crisps, and a selection of salady stuff (peppers, carrot sticks, cucumber sticks), followed by lots of lovely fruit (kebabs are possible?) served with (optional) chocolate sauce. then the obligatory party rinds, wee cupcakes, top hats etc.

tassisssss · 16/04/2008 15:42

that's party rings not rinds!

We've just made Fat Controller Hats but they may not be suitable for dd?
They are really easy....... chocolate digestives on the bottom and chocolate rolls cut in half and stuck to biscuits with a little butter icing.... they looked very authentic!!

sunflowervalley · 16/04/2008 17:17

Thanks everyone ,some great ideas.

Not doing a theme as such just a mix of everything.

Good idea about keeping the sweet stuff out of view whilst they eat the savory stuff.

We managed to do this even though they had done the decorating and icing etc. Pizzas were done on baking parchment with names written on. Buns and biscuits were put on paper plates with names written on the bottom which didn't come out until savouries rairly well eaten.

Fairy cakes iced with soft frosting. Then fill lots of little bowls with sprinkles, jelly tots, raisins etc and let them decorate the cakes themselves. Went down a storm at my god- daughter's 5th birthday.

FrannyandZooey · 17/04/2008 08:02

ds just turned 5 and I did:
star shaped sandwiches
wraps rolled up and cut into tiny spiral sandwiches
dips and veg
mini lemon cookies
mini fairy cakes
strawberries dipped in chocolate (these VANISHED)
grapes
mozzarella pearls and cherry toms on sticks
chopped up veggies sausages

and cheese and bread and pate crackers for the adults - didn't get enough bread though, it vanished also

I was going to do mini fruit scones filled with jam and cream but couldn't be arsed ran out of time

Hulababy · 17/04/2008 08:06

It was DD's 6th party last weekend and we served:

pitta bread
breadsticks
mini cucumbers
cherry tomatoes
mini peppers
humous
crisps
mini sausages
cheese portions
strips of ham

then

platter of strawberries, pineapple and grapes (all sparkly with food glitter)
cupcakes
party ring biscuits

The dance teacher we had running the party was impressed with how much the children all ate and for how long they kept eating!

sunflowervalley · 17/04/2008 09:58

Some great ideas.

Had'nt thought about seperate food for adults.
Assuming some will stay with there children.

Houous is a good one,my children love it.

Hulababy-where would I get food glitter?

I saw popcorn mentioned on another thread a few days ago, thought it was a good idea.
Mrshmallows dipped in chocolate and left to set in petit-four cases (we call them tophats) go down well too. I sometimes put a smartie on top too.
