My ds has just turned 1, he has always been a fussy eater and its starting to drive me mad, I spend ages preparing healthy meals for him but he starts whinging before he even tries it, its always a huge effort to get the 1st spoonful in. He will eat jars of baby food but I dont wont him to have these as they are expensive and I think at his age he should be having proper meals. I give him a variety of finger foods but he throws most of it on the floor, although he loves cheese and breadsticks but this isnt a v balanced diet. Will this phase ever stop?

I know exactly how you feel. I am having the same problem with my ds(now 16mnths). ALso went through similar phases with dd(now 4.5) and it does pass after a bit.But its so frustrating at the time.
The only thing I found I could do was put whatever I want him to eat for dinner in a saucepan and put a few preprepared ice cubes of tomoato and basil sauce in and he usually eats it fine then. If he loves cheese would he eat things if smothered in a cheese sauce.

will watch this to see if others have any great solutions.

Well I actually managed to get some lasagne down him this evening, although it took about an hr to feed him because I could only give hime really small mouthfalls otherwise he spat it out, but this was a result!Just bought Annabel Karmels baby and toddler recipe book and theres some sauces in there that I'm going to try. Some of the recipes seem a bit overcomplicated for a 1 year old though so I think I will just make the sauces and put it on veg, meat and pasta.

I have this problem with DS (13mo), there are a handful of meals that he will eat without fuss but lately if I try anything new you'd think I was trying to poison him. I'm trying to chill out about it but it is stressful, some days he hardly eats anything.

I'm hoping that at some point he will magically become more co-operative about eating

My DD has always been like this she is now 17 months and it has improved. I did realise that she likes dry foods and for it all to be separate - plain rice, plain pasta, meatballs without sauce and hates mixed up foods of all types. It took months of trying different things. She does sometimes live off pasta and pesto and when she is ill the range of foods is rather limited. However she is quite round and tall so I know I shouldn't worry. She has never wolfed down a plate of food in her life.

Other tips a fork since she was around 11 months has been much more successful than a spoon she likes spearing things. It is very disheartening to spend all that time cooking and preparing food just to throw it all away.

I served her plain rice from about 7 months she didn't eat it until 15 months and now loves it. Same for baked beans - it is a very slow process. Serve protein, carb and veg and fruit/yoghurt for pudding and they will get there I hope...

Oh yes, the fork has recently been a big hit with DS. He loves eating sweetcorn with it and will happily spear his way through most of a tin.

dd ate evrything util 1 then just ate breadsticks, bananas,, brocolli and laughing cow sandwiches and yoghurt until 17m and is now gradually beginning to eat a slightly more varied diet i.e pasta and veg with tomato or cheese sauce/ savoury rice beans and fish fingers etc etc.

I was tearing my hair out too but it does pass honest
