Bagels

I'm often up very early with my child and need a little treat to start off my day. Can anyone recommend an online bagel company, someone that would deliver?

Depends where you live, I imagine

If you are near Bricklane in London, I'm sure one of the many delivaroo/uber eat type companies would deliver from the 24hr bagel shop there.

The beigels from there are delicious. Leeds and Manchester both used to have great independent Jewish bakeries with fantastic ones but quite a few shut down in the past 15 years

I'm sure I've seen them in freezer cabinets, but can't remember where.

Uk, I've found a few that delivery by post, but looking for recommendations.

I recommend Brick Lane - says they do nationwide delivery:https://www.beigelbake.co.uk/

mondaytosunday · 09/08/2024 07:30

@AndMiffyWentToSleep no they don't - but will deliver within M25 though! Putting my order in now...
I grew up in a predominantly Jewish area in the US and OMG I miss those bagels!

Turophilic · 09/08/2024 08:44

@Therealmetherealme , unless you live within shouting distance of a (Jewish area, let’s be honest) bagel bakery I’d just pick a different snack of choice. Obviously Brick Lane is pretty much the gold standard.

Insert personal lament for much missed Chalutz Bakery in Moortown

Bagels are meant to be eaten when fresh. Day-olds are sold off cheaper and are ok for toasting - bakeries sell them off cheap for that reason.

Anything with a U.K. wide delivery… you may as well get the New York Deli ones from the supermarket.

Hmmm - on reflection, with “little treat to start my day” this sounds more like a marketing query than an actual desire for a bagel.

Therealmetherealme · 09/08/2024 10:32

@Turophilic no negative vibes, I'm just often up at 03:30/4:00 and am looking for a little something to brighten my day. School holidays are tough for many and we look for a little sunshine where we can find it.

It was the “Little treat” when talking about one of the densest types of bread that rang false.

I bloody love a bagel, but they’re more a filling and robust start to the day than a little treat.

3:30am starts are brutal. You have my sympathy.

Carebearsonmybed · 09/08/2024 12:19

That's not breakfast that's a midnight snack!

Eating a heaving meal will stop you from getting back to sleep which is what you should be doing when you're woke in the middle of the night.

Frozen bagels have no resemblance to freshly baked.

Therealmetherealme · 10/08/2024 18:43

Sorry all, wasn't trying to drop feed, was just looking for a recommendation.

My son often starts his day around 04:00, there's no going back to sleep and he needs someone keeping an eye on him at all times. Sugar would be my first choice, can't stomach a lot of things that early, so was hoping for something like a bagel that I could quickly toast. Any other suggestions welcome.

Carebearsonmybed · 10/08/2024 21:47

Don't accept 4am as a day start time.

That isn't healthy.

Push his start until at least 6am preferably later.

Speak to your health visitor.

JC03745 · 10/08/2024 22:06

OP- you do know that many supermarkets sell bagels you can toast at home or just eat as they are? Not the same as a freshly baked one that day, but still pretty good at 4am. Plain, savoury and sweet versions are available.

I don't really like the standard shop bought supermarket bagels but love the bagel thins from Aldi or Asda, especially with spicy smashed avocado.

Therealmetherealme · 11/08/2024 06:54

Thanks for the replies.

My child has additional needs so wake-up time can be anything between 03:30-06:00, just glad he sleeps a few hours. I know I'm luckier than some.

Of course I know supermarkets sell them, was just hoping something a bit special, maybe less ingredients. Everything from an afternoon tea to a Cornish pasty can be delivered, why not bagels.

Avocado is a good shout, I've been having Waitrose Organic cream cheese (delish) but avocado has so many health benefits.

I love making bagels if you have time for that.
Ocado do more specialised bagels which are lovely. I looked at all the local bread delivery places near me in London and not many do bagels.

Oh I've never tried making them before, definitely one to try when the kids go back to school. Do you have a favourite recipe?
I haven't had an Ocado delivery for years, but regularly get emails for money off so I'll have a look x

Cohens bakery bagels on ocado are pretty good. Not sure what their geographic reach is. I slice and freeze them as they don’t keep beyond a day, but are lovely toasted.
