Hog roasts - what do they cost?

Anyone know what the rough ball park is for a hog roast i.e. hiring the equipment and getting the pig? Also, anyone know if a lamb is cheaper of whether you can do half pigs or half lambs? Finally, anyone got any good hog roast suppliers recommendations that would cover the Berkshire area?

TIA

I don't know about hiring all the gear, but DH is hell bent on doing one in the summer! He goes to Smithfields in London for our meat and has seen sucking pigs for about £25.

JoshandJamie · 13/04/2008 18:44

Really - just £25!!! I'm hellbent on doing one this summer but only if it's not going to cost me a bomb

I went to a wedding reception recently where it cost them £500 including a chef to prepare and serve.

MaureenMLove · 13/04/2008 18:47

So he says! I've just double checked. He said the bigger, (mummy pigs!) were about £60. He wants to dig a pit at the bottom of the garden, god love him! He thinks he's Ray Meers!

SniffyHock · 13/04/2008 18:49

I think it's about £500 if you get a company to do it.

We did a fantastic Jamie Oliver Pork recipe on the BBQ for 10 people if you have smaller numbers. Just make sure you buy a meat probe and you can't go wrong.

JoshandJamie · 13/04/2008 19:37

Well if a mummy pig is £60, I might go for one of those and just hire the equipment. Must be cheaper than getting someone to come do it for you. I looked at the links Shinypinkshoes - they all look great but don't have obvious pricing. Not sure why they all insist on keeping it such a mystery!

A friend of mine paid £300 last summer, chap came & set it all up & then left her to it. She had to carve & serve it when it was cooked. Then chop up & dispose of the carcass, she hated that bit. For an extra £200 the chap would have done it all. That's the option she's going for this year.

JoshandJamie · 13/04/2008 20:35

Brightwell, don't suppose you remember which company your friend used do you or where she was based?

i think hugh fw has instructions in one of his books. you should speak to local butcher.

I'm having a hog roast for my 40th birthday party later this year. I tried to book one for my brothers birthday party 2 yeasr ago. It was going to cost £700 to feed about 70 - 100 people and needed to be booked ages in advance...in fact the chap said to me (admittedly phoning 1 week before the party)

"We couldn't possibly supply you with this little notice, where do you think we gets these things from...off the shelf?"

brightwell · 14/04/2008 07:24

Oxford based, I can get more details if you need them.

bellavita · 14/04/2008 07:31

There is a hog roast man in the next village to us. All he provides is himself (time etc) and the pig. He charges around £500.

You have to provide all the extras like salads, bread etc.

CantSleepWontSleep · 14/04/2008 07:39

We had one a couple of years ago and it cost almost £1k, including a man to cook it, and a veggie alternative. We were feeding about 60 people, but it would have cost the same for up to 100, as that's how many they reckon the pig will serve (you can freeze any leftover pork).

Crunchie · 14/04/2008 07:39

local to us £300 to feed 100 people, that includes pig/equipment/chefs/servers/apple sauce/rolls/napkins etc. I think that is a bargain to feed 100 people for £300, add a few salads and a veggie something, or jkt potatoes (huge bags for little ££) and you are done

JoshandJamie · 14/04/2008 07:51

Brightwell - if you could get the details that would be fab because I'm just south of Oxfordshire so it might be suitable. And Crunchi, where are you because £300 is what I'd like to pay but don't know if that's the going rate for this area.
