How much chocolate or sweets should a one year old have?

My DD is just about to turn one and I have been very good in keeping choc to a minimum. Every few days she might get a couple of choc buttons as a treat but thats it.. no more. Since nan has started doing a bit of baby sitting, she has been getting lots of choc and flumps. How much to too much. I was under the impression that sugar was to be kept to a minimum until a proper eating pattern was established, well into the toddler years. Am I worrying over nothing? Thanks

Mil bought my dd2 (7 months) a whole Easter Egg. I consider it my duty to eat it; she will of course get the benefits via my milk.

Flumps are kind of fluffy marshmallow sweets, pink and yellow. Often sold in the form of a long sweet, cost about 10p. Or you can get smaller ones.

None at that age. Leave all that until they are much older, it will happen soon enough anyway without forcing the issue at age 1!

chocolates and sweets - v occasional treat.
Puddings and cakes - mine had them every day.

My DS (18 mo) has chocolate a couple of times a week. Usually when I am having some tbh. I don't give him sweets at all and I will wait until they are discovered before doing so.

Big difference between fat and calories (which we all need) and sugar (which we don't). There is no good nutritional reason for children (or adults) to be eating sweets or cakes etc. They get plenty of natural sugars in food like fruit and there are plenty of better ways of giving them fat or calories (unseetened yoghurt, milk, cheese, wholemeal bread and pasta etc). I never gave any sort of sweets, chocolates, biscuits, cake etc to my kids at 1 and have gradually become less strict about this (dc2 has had a much better deal) but I still never give sweets to my kids (6 & 4), although I won't prevent them eating them if they're given some at parties etc. Would never let them have more than a few crisps either. I do let them have choc and biscuits occasionally too. They're not allowed to take sweets or chocolate for school lunches so they take yoghurt, fruit, cheese, vegetables etc as well as sandwiches. And just looking at my dcs will tell you they're certainly not short of calories or energy!

Nuts, fruit, carrot sticks, cheese, crackers make good treats. And dried fruit (like raisins or apricots) although these have a high sugar content but at least have fibre etc.

DD 2yr knows chocolate but no idea what sweets / lollies are . If she eats all her lunch she might but not always get some she could have a few extra strawberries instead. I woudl spoil with more 'natural treats at 1 - rather than sweet things.

Has anyone ever fallen out with their mother in law over this issue. I have mentioned the worry I have over it and all I have got back was... it never did my two any harm. I know for a fact that she will give her sweets behind my back. I can tell because my dd won't eat food at dinner time. Even her fave meal.

sausagecake, start a thread entitled "Arghh! 1 year old won't eat because MIL has been stuffing him with sweets again!" and I am sure you'll get plenty of similar experiences...I sympathise - did not have this problem myself, but it must be really annoying.

Its a good time to start saying to MIL you can give her sweets but they are to be eaten after dinner- Then you can remove the wrong ones. Yes I would fall out wil MIL as she will not be paying the dentist bills. My MIL has got better she now gives them to dd in front of me and they are from her for after dinner. Good Luck what does your dh say ???
