Annabel Karmel - Apple & Chicken Balls

Anyone ever made these? Are they nice? Suitable for 12 monthd old? Did you cook them first then freeze them? If so, did you microwave them when you wanted them again? For how long - am terrified of not reheating chicken properly and poisoning him. Are they horrible when reheated? Rubbery?

So many questions about a meatball - wot madness!!!

I've made them - a bit faffy but they taste lovely. I froze them raw, then defrosted and cooked them. Yes, suitable for a 12 month old.

They are delicious and my dd is addicted to them.
Not sure about the oxo cube in the recipe though, so left it out and they are still so scrumptious.
We make them as chicken burgers or goujons as these shapes are easier to reheat throughly, being thiner than balls. Unlike Peggotty, we cook them and then freeze and reheat in oven as we don;t have microwave.
We also adapted the recipe and substituted chicken for beef or lamb mince, or even salmon.
Excellent way of introducing meat if you're doing BLW

BTW - dd has been eating them since she was 8 months.
And, if we're going out for the day, I reheat them and take them as a packed lunch for her.

what a coincedence - this always happens on MN, I have just come up from the kitchen after making them! I used to do them all the time with ds1 but have been a bit lazy recently so just dug out the recipe for 7m old to introduce some meat, as mentioned, in a BLW fashion tommorow (doing a mixture of BLW and "mush"). I make them with pork (mine don't have beef or chicken) and make them into more patty type shapes. Then I (if memory serves) used to cut them into strips or fingers for finger food and, leter, a little pot of cheese sauce to dip into.

They are really easy and quick but look resonably impressive. A good tip for them is to blend any leftover white bread as soon as it goes a bit stale or hard and then put it in a tub in the freezer so you always have breadcrumbs in for them.

No idea what they taste like, to be fair, as I am veggie but my ds1 did used to love them (and DP says they are nice).

I used to cook, cool, freeze and then micro but not for very long - 2 separate bursts rather than sustained nuking.

Booboobedoo · 10/04/2008 21:53

I've got a great stash of these in the freezer. They defrost in about an hour just left out, then I roll them in flour and fry them.

I love 'em - have to stop myself nicking DS'.

Leeeza · 10/04/2008 22:15

Thanks everyone

Booboobedoo - assume u freeze them raw them just fry them fresh when u want them, rather than cooking then freezing then reheating?

U wrap each ball in clingfilm then freeze?

I just cook and then freeze DS LOVES them

Booboobedoo · 10/04/2008 22:45

Freeze (raw) on a tray sealed in a bag, then just push them off the tray into the bag when frozen.

HTH.

I wouldn't eat chicken balls, not after watching "I'm a Celebrity...."
