Recommend me one of those upside down cup blenders, needed for curry sauces, chopping nuts, grinding spices etc

I fancy one of those blenders where you have a cup, put the lid on and then put it upside down on a base. I want a really compact, slimline item that isnt going to take up a lot of room on the worktop because Ive just cleared off a load of stuff from there.

I feel this would be easier to clean for me than the bowl type I bought recently and now just gathers dust. It would mainly be for curry sauces and pastes etc

I can see a lot of them are nutribullets, and some are just any old made up name, are they all much of a muchness?

I notice the nutribullet ones just come with one type of blade, is that the only type of blade I need for chopping nuts or grinding spices, or even coffee if I needed that?

I dont suppose any of them are good for fine chopping things like parmesan are they?

Watching as I want the same thing and have the same questions!

Anyone?

I'm not convinced there's a "one size fits all" solution here. I've got a nutribullet that I use for sauces/hummus but I have a normal small food processor that has an additional grating/shredding blade for other things.

I have a vitamix, 10 yr guarantee, pulverises everything, tis amazing

Ive got a small food processor that I could do sauces in, but also has the shredding and grating blades, so I do alreayd have that, I use it for grating and shredding but theres lots of 'bits' to it, I just want something simple and small that can sit on the top and not look too big and ugly to do sauces with. But as I try to grind a lot of spices in a pestle and mortar and not that good at it, too weak, I wouldnt mind one that can do that as well.

This is what I saw that is a cheapy version of nutribullet with the 2 different types of blade

I’ve got a nutribullet but it’s not great for small amounts as everything just gets clogged up in the blades so I tend to use my Kenwood mini chopper more which is excellent.

soupfiend · 03/07/2024 08:00

What do you mean by small amounts, what if I was mixing up some onions, garlic, chilli, herbs, spices etc for a curry sauce?

Ive also seen spice and coffee grinders but they seem very small

Nutribullet is no good for small amounts. Watching with interest as I’ve been looking for something similar.

MagpiePi · 03/07/2024 08:17

I've had a Breville Blend Active for a few years which has been fine and was a lot cheaper than the nutribullet.
It came with a couple of water bottle type containers for making smoothies but also two small containers, about an inch deep, for spices/coffee beans etc.

I don't think the new version comes with the small cups though.

Have you thought about a basic stick blender?

Edited to add: I also have a dedicated coffee grinder which would be ideal for grinding up herbs and spices, and has a bigger cup than the breville, but you'd struggle to get an onion in there.

Georgyporky · 03/07/2024 08:54

I use a dry/wet grinder for pastes, but not big enough for onions etc.

Ive got a myriad of items!

I have the braun stick blender, with blender pot. But it means I have to get it out the drawer, stick it all together, the top is heavy for me as I have weak hands, and the pot is not very big, things get clagged in it

Then I have a kenwood mini processor which has grating and shredding blades. Ive not used it for blending because it has lots of bits to put together

I also have some massive red thing, not sure if its nutribullet or not, too big, double blades, very effective but I never get it out

So I was hoping for a solution to keen a nice neat little thing on the work top, with the cup that you turn upside down and blitz, seems easier to clean to my eyes, fewer bits, can leave it plugged in etc

But I need it to do blitzing for curry pastes, sauces, I dont really have smoothies. Blitzing up soup would be helpful. But I would also like to have something that could grind up spices and herbs but with onions and garlic, ginger as well to make paste

Have you got the items numbers of them, or a link?

I have one similar to this... don't think the model is available anymore but you might find a newer version. Had it about a year ago- it's not perfect but good enough. It blends fine just when you're using the smoothie cups you have to take them off and give them a shake halfway or you get lumps. For the price it's good though, I could have spent loads more and got similar performance! All the bits go in the dishwasher too

(Don't get a Breville blend activ smoothie maker, I bought one and had to return it because it got really hot and smelled of burning!)

I got a really good spice grinder from Argos a few years ago & it’s exactly as you describe. It has a smaller cup thing inside the upside down grinder for smaller amounts of cardamoms, cumin seeds, etc and I also use it to blend small amounts of rosemary, garlic & salt for lamb. It’s a James Martin (? Celebrity chef? ) one.

Look on Argos under spices grinder. I think maybe that matches what you are describing!
