we're going to an informal "cheese and wine" at DPs boss's house tomorrow night. It'll be my first time meeting his new work colleagues. We'll be bringing a couple of bottles with us - any recommendations for a nice bottle of red? - preferably available tescos/sainsburys/asdas, not more than about £14 a bottle. I tend to go for lighter reds - australian cabernet sauvingnon, shiraz sauv. something like that - but DP liks fuller bodied - so am pretty easy!

Love a good Chateau Neuf du Pape (sp??) meself - I'm sure you could get a luvverly one for £14

MummyDoIt · 10/04/2008 10:47

Tickle's suggestion is a good one, or a Fleurie or St Emilion.

Tickle · 10/04/2008 10:48

that looked wrong - chateauneuf all one word

Or a crozes hermitage. Yum.

but which Chateau Neuf? Which Fleurie/St Emillion??? Or should I just not worry too much and get a couple of bottles of Jacobs Creek?

Is there an oddbins near you. I would try and get them to recommend you one lighter euro style for you and something more ribena like for your dp.

other option is to try a pudding wine. these actually go much much better with cheese than red wine (something to do with the tannins i think)

Aussie Cab Sauv and Shiraz are all pretty heavy wines as the heat down there produces lots of alcohol so I would go with one of those but a really good one. My fave is Camden Park Shiraz/Petit Verdot but it is quite difficult to get now, it is about 7 quid but you can't really go wrong with a decent bottle of Penfolds.

If you want to choose French, chat Neuf de Pape is lovely or a Gigondas is good too and I too love Croze ?Hermitage.

I'm a Rioja fan personally... Faustino Gran Reserva is particularly nice

katierocket · 10/04/2008 10:53

you can't go wrong with Pinot Noir

Carmenere · 10/04/2008 10:53

Not Jacobs Creek. Tbh if they are holding a wine and cheese evening they have probably bought the wine they will serve but do bring some anyway.

Also like Roc du Lussac (Lussac-St Emilion) 2006 Bordeaux - Sainsbury - about £12 a bottle

witchandchips · 10/04/2008 10:55

torres coranas or sangre de toro are much better bet than jacobs creek

Carmenere · 10/04/2008 10:58

Waitrose do a decent St Emilion at around 12 quid.

nervousal · 10/04/2008 11:01

used to drink lots of sangre de toro (the one with the wee bull on it?) its a rioja isn't it?? haven't had rioja in years - might be about time to revisit it
