Hello

I’d like to start eating more grains and pulses, either cold salads or warm as a side dish. Does anyone have any great tried and tested recipes to share (ideally with an online link but not necessary)

I have one chickpea salad that I do a lot but would love some similar ideas.

Couscous/tabbouleh type recipes also very welcome

Thank you!

Did you mean this Georgyporky?

In searching for it I found this which also looks good. I’m a pearl barley fan and need more ideas for it

Yes, that's the one, but I do find it a bit bland without adding herbs & spices.

I sound like a massive wanker but I have started buying the Bold Bean queen chickpeas (that are like £4 for a BIG jar) and they are SOOO nice compared to tinned so if they're the 'main ingredient' in a cold thing I do go for those.

They are delicious - my favourite thing at the minute. M and S sell them along with the butter beans.

Ok, I’m making the three pea feta one tomorrow to go with BBQ, and am buying stuff for the butternut squash freekeh one. Will progress from there! Maybe the satay chickpeas next. And will batch cook some dal.

Freekeh is a fantastic grain to add to your diet! It has a nutty, slightly smoky flavor and a chewy texture. Here are some ideas on how to use it:
Main Course Ideas:
Freekeh Salad with Roasted Vegetables: Roast your favorite vegetables (like broccoli, peppers, carrots, or zucchini) with herbs and spices. Toss them with cooked freekeh, crumbled feta, and a lemon-tahini dressing.
Freekeh and Lentil Soup: This hearty soup is packed with protein and fiber. Sauté onions, garlic, and carrots, then add freekeh, lentils, broth, and spices. Simmer until the freekeh and lentils are tender.
Freekeh Stuffed Peppers: A healthy and satisfying meal. Cook freekeh with chopped vegetables and herbs. Stuff the mixture into bell peppers and bake until tender.
Freekeh Bowl with Grilled Chicken or Salmon: A flavorful and versatile base for a meal. Top cooked freekeh with grilled chicken or salmon, roasted vegetables, and a drizzle of tahini sauce.
Freekeh and Chickpea Curry: A fragrant and flavorful curry made with spices, coconut milk, chickpeas, and cooked freekeh.
Side Dish Ideas:
Simple Freekeh with Herbs: Cook freekeh according to package directions. Toss with olive oil, chopped herbs, and a squeeze of lemon juice.
Freekeh Pilaf: Sauté onions and garlic with spices like cumin, turmeric, and coriander. Add freekeh and broth, and cook until tender.
Freekeh and Quinoa Salad: Combine cooked freekeh and quinoa with chopped vegetables, herbs, and a light vinaigrette.
Other Ideas:
Freekeh Breakfast Porridge: Cook freekeh in milk or water with a pinch of salt and a sweetener of your choice. Top with fruit, nuts, or seeds.
Freekeh Bread: Use freekeh flour to bake delicious bread.
Freekeh Burgers: Grind freekeh into a paste and combine with vegetables and spices to make veggie burgers.
Tips:
Rinse freekeh before cooking: This helps remove any excess starch and prevents it from becoming sticky.
Don't overcook freekeh: It should be tender but still have a slight chewiness.
Experiment with spices: Freekeh pairs well with a variety of spices, such as cumin, turmeric, coriander, cinnamon, and ginger.
Use leftovers creatively: Freekeh can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and used in salads, soups, or stir-fries.
Have fun exploring the world of freekeh!

Me too. They are soo much better

I misread @GatherYePearls post. It’s their butter beans that I’m hooked on. Must try the chick peas

I love this dal, often make it and freeze a couple of portions https://meerasodha.com/recipes/daily-dal/

I’ll often roast Mediterranean veg and throw a tin of chickpeas in for the last 5 minutes.

if you feeling lazy M&S have a new pouched Indian style rice and lentil side that is lovely.

I also make a quick home made baked beans, make a tomato sauce add any veg from fridge, bit of chilli and a tin of beans….lovely on toast for breakfast. Freezes well.

I buy the pouches of cooked lentils and mix with a tray of roasted vegetables, I eat that for lunch with some feta.
