What do people use to cover food from flies, which isn't clingfilm and doesnt take up much storage space?

We are eating more and more of our food at room temperature so I like to put it out on the side in the kitchen a couple of hours before we eat.

What do you use to cover it? Hopefully something that looks nice and doesnt take up much storage space - or is easy and simple.

At the moment I seem to be balancing some of the plastic covers from supermarket fruit/veg over things, not very effective though - and why are there SO many!!!

We're trying to avoid using clingfilm and other disposable things whenever we can from a eco-lite point of view.

Upside down plate?

That was going to be my suggestion too. We mostly just do that at home.

Huge thanks... really great suggestions here... looking forward to exploring them all

Yes, I do use a plate or bowl on top quite often but doesnt always work!!

We use a combination of dishes with lids, upturned plates, beeswax wraps and pop up net covers.

It would also be worth thinking more widely about stopping the flies. You can get simple to fit meshes to cover open windows and doors which are very effective at keeping the flies out in the first place. They are often magnet close or similar and are very fine mesh not those god awful multicoloured plastic strip curtains of yesteryear.

Clean tea towels or baby muslins. I also have some of the mesh dome things for if the food would be damaged by a tea towel (eg decorated cakes) but they take up more space.

Tea towels are your answer!

We have Charles viancin silicon plate covers in several different sizes, use them every day I’d say.

Plate, tea towel, small wooden chopping board. I'm not washing out wraps, shower caps.

Cold oven is a good idea.

I sometimes use shower caps. Cheap, easily washable and stretchy.

I do this. They are perfect. Originally use for proving dough.

Do you use the super cheap disposable hotel types? That's what I do currently but wondering about getting a couple of more heavy duty ones...

In the cold oven

Those of you who are using actual shower caps (as opposed to Lakeland's showercap-style food covers), make sure it the shower cap doesn't touch the food. Shower caps are not made with food-safe plastic - some are PVC etc, and could potentially leach phthalates into your food.

That’s useful to know, thank you!

I mainly use them over bowls when proofing bread dough, & the dough never reaches the top.

I've got net covers that pop up and down like a festival tent. I got them from B&M.

This is such a great tip! Thank you!

A metre of cheap curtain netting.

IKEA sell microwave plate covers for £1. I have a few to use to cover food during BBQs and cakes as they're cooking.
