Celebration meal in a holiday let ideas please

I am going away with family for a birthday celebration (not mine). I have no idea what to make for dinner. 6 people, on gf, 2 slightly fussy kids. Needs to be relatively fuss free or something I can prep / make / transport and reheat easily. It looks like there's a hob, oven and microwave but I won't have lots of time.

Please share some inspiration with me because I am stuck at curry or lasagne which seem quite dull and a regular part of our menu.

How about:

Starter - champagne and nibbles (bought ones - something fancy for adults, something gluten free and something the kids like )
Main - steak (cook on day on hob) with dauphinoise potatoes (make in advance and transport) and a veg which the kids like.
Dessert - something like creme brulee, chocolate pots, fruit salad etc which you can make in advance and transport that everyone will eat

Nothing wrong with curry or lasagna in principle but would the fussy kids eat curry and lasagna is not gf unless you buy gf pasta....

I had my 40th in an enormous holiday let and we got Waitrose platters.

We recently had my 40th in a holiday house, just immediate family, so 5 of us. To be fair, we've been there before so knew it was well equipped, but we had:

Champagne, fresh seafood (coastal place), pata negra, and very nice charcuterie from the Italian deli

3 roast ribs of beef from our amazing butcher who grows his own meat. Being unsure of ovens etc, a whole fillet wrapped in prosciutto or similar could be easier than rib roast.

Dessert was a salted caramel chocolate tart from a patisserie that we brought with us

Very nice cheese and crackers

All actually very easy, and very very 'treaty' and completely delicious, wouldn't change a thing!. With some nice wine it was perfect. We took the beef, charcuterie, tart and cheese with us, and bought everything else there, pretty remote place 3 hours from a major city but great supermarket and seafood, and pretty 'foodie'. Definitely consider shopping, what's there, and what's easier to take with you.

Thank you all. Fantastic ideas already, especially all the suggestions of how to make it all more of a treat such as fancy nibbles, champagne and a lovely cheese board to finish.

Steak and dauphoise potatoes is a great idea @NC10125 thank you.

Yes, the slightly fussy children aren't too bad and I'm used to making things gf so not bad at making substitutes.

I feel inspired already but if anyone has any more good ideas please keep them coming.

A bit weather-dependent, but a really good boeuf bourguignon with dauphinoise would take less faffing on the day than steak, and both can be pre-prepped. Just veg to cook on day, get nibbles, starters and dessert from somewhere like Cook?

sunflowerfan · 15/06/2024 10:19

Fajitas?
Take all the veg pre-chopped.

I would probably go with something slow cooked you can mostly cook at home and then finish off there, like a slow cooked shoulder of lamb (lots of fancier recipes around with eg Persian flavours). Mash reheats pretty well. Pre roast a tray of veg bar the last 10 min and finish them off there.

Appreciate these are not very summery suggestions but it’s not very summery right now!

I wouldn’t write off curry - easy to do in advance and can feel pretty celebratory with all the trimmings like raita, chutney, naan (don’t have to be home made).

I would be nervous of steak as if there isn’t a good extractor you could be eating in a smoky room, needs a well powered hob and decent pan too. Also hard to do lots at once.
