Olive oil 5L where to buy?

Hi all,

i recently got a olive oil dispenser bottle so was thinking of buying olive oil 5L to decant (or 3L) Any suggestions which brands to buy and where? I’m looking at something that can be used for every day cooking and also for salads etc.

something value for money would be good as the prices seem so expensive!
thanks

COSTCO

I use this for cooking, which is a blend of olive and sunflower oil. Lovely looking tin so I don't decant it!

I wouldn't use it for drizzling on salads though - I buy the standard 1ltr bottles of Extra Virgin Olive Oil for that (which I wouldn't cook with), which I do then decant into a drizzling bottle to match my balasmic vinegar bottle.

Olive oil isn't really heat stable for high temperature cooking, you want coconut, avocado, ghee or animal fat for cooking. If you want an amazing quality olive oil for dipping and salad dressing then look for a cold pressed extra virgin. Odysea do a few good ones, depending on what flavour profile you are looking for.... you will pay about £50-70 for 3 l. More for single estate.

a gigantic bottle of olive oil is a bit risky - if you have a spill, you could spill 20 quids worth of oil

I would look for deals on 1L bottles personally

Amazon. I just paid £61 delivered for 5 litres of Cretan olive oil. It has shot up in price but it's still worth it to me.

The can will be heavy to pour from (I enlist DH as I am a weakling) You will be fine pouring into a litre bottle, just stand it in the sink and use a funnel if you aren't sure of your aim!

Wouldn't it more likely go of?

Thanks everyone - I will be decanting the big bottle into a 500ml to 1L bottle using a funnel so thought buying a big bottle to decent will be cheaper than buying individual bottles

I used blended olive oil for cooking and have no issues at all at high temperatures. EVOO just for salads and similar, i.e. not heated up. I get a big bottle from Sainsbury's when I can, which has a lower unit price than the 1l bottles.

How much oil do you use

NcOpen · 17/06/2024 09:28

We fry things on a daily basis as we don’t really use the oven much so we use quite a lot.

Pan fry that is, not deep fry

My local Arabic shops have the 5l tins. However DH went yesterday and was shocked at the price! They were mostly in the £12-15 per litre price range. Aldi specially selected was slightly cheaper at £10.50 per litre.

Synergies · 17/06/2024 09:33

We buy Greek extra virgin olive oil in 3L tins from Costco. Very happy with it.

I find 3L to be pretty heavy by the way. I would probably struggle to lift and pour carefully from a 5L tin...

Sgtmajormummy · 17/06/2024 09:38

I think the only way to get reasonable prices on olive oil is to buy at a wholesale outlet. Do you know anybody who could buy it for you?

Personally, with the recent increases I’ve switched to rapeseed for most cooking and just keep the good stuff for salads and table use. The Lidl mixed origin olive oil in a tall rectangular 350ml bottle is not bad.

NcOpen · 17/06/2024 10:40

Thanks @Sgtmajormummy - I have been thinking of switching to rapeseed oil also as the current olive oil prices are just ridiculous.
Maybe it is time for a Costco membership! We don’t have one that near but could make a drive to stock up if needed.

£20 is a bit optimistic these days. Probably more like 40.

NcOpen · 18/06/2024 10:36

One more question! I did see a cheaper olive oil from Amazon where it says a blend of extra virgin and refined olive oil.

  • ”Olive oil composed of refined olive oils and virgin olive oils“

Its £7.75/L but being blended, is there negatives to this?

There are different refining processes, some kinder than others.
I’d stay away from that product and go for cold-pressed, virgin or extra virgin olive oil.
