Too young to eat a burger - one year old DS?

What age do you think is too young to give your child a burger? Have just made some burgers and frozen them for dinners over the next couple of weeks for my husband and am now wondering if i could give them to my DS - he turned one last week, has 4 front teeth and enjoys all his food so far. Do you think it would be ok to defrost one of the burgers and give it to him in a roll and some tomato sauce all broken into bitesize pieces or do you think he is too young?
Burger contains lean mince, chopped onion, beaten egg, breadcrumbs, chopped red pepper, grated apple and a dash of worcestershire sauce.

Try him and see.
Can I come to tea please ?

I think you should put your recipe in the Recipe section of MN too

madamez · 07/04/2008 23:01

SOunds all right to me if he is used to eating food that is in chunks (rather than smooth purees). Some people would squeal at the worcestershire sauce as it's very salty, but TBH a tiny dash in a burger probably isn't that dangerous to a child who is over 1.

I was giving homemade burgers by then, definately. And there was another recipe which was meatballs which had the same ingredients in exactly, just in tomato sauce as well.

bellavita · 07/04/2008 23:01

I don't see why not. It is homemade, nothing in it that shouldn't be there so give it a try.

Greensleeves · 07/04/2008 23:02

aarrrgh, I really need a burger now, with cheese

I don't see why it would be a probalm to give him your home made burger! Doesn't have anything in it that a bolognese sauce wouldn't.

I might leave our the ketchup. but only because my DS is addicted to the stuff and I wish I'd never introduced him to it! Instead give it to him in a bun with some chopped up tomatoes.

S1ur · 07/04/2008 23:04

Burger sounds lovely. yum. wouldn't go for tomato sauce personally (unless you've been making that too you domestic goddess you)

No problem in trying him. At one mine prefered sandwich sized pieces rather than bite sized so a burger would have fit that bill.

madamez · 07/04/2008 23:08

But I just can't help thinking that some of the MN Food Police are going to read the thread title, pop a haemorrhoid and come shrieking over to berate you as they assume you mean you're taking him to McDonalds, then they'll read your OP and slink away deflated....

S1ur · 07/04/2008 23:11

Heh madamez only on mumsnet would a title that read

Too young to eat a burger - one year old DS?

be actually about a farking home-made burger complete with recipe . I bet it was organic too, go on it was wasn't it?

OverMyDeadBody · 07/04/2008 23:13

lol at madamez and slur!

The thing is, if it was going to be MacDonalds, the mum wouldn't be posting to ask advice on whether or not her 1yr old should have it would she?!

Leeeza · 08/04/2008 15:35

lol Slur - yes it is organic !!!

Thanks everyone - shall give it a go - assume it wont be too chewy...

Sad thing is that i'm a veggie so can't even enjoy it - husband and son will enjoy then i'm too bl**y tired to make anything and will have beans on toast!!!! Wot a martyr !!!

I used to offer DD home made burgers at that age, but she found them too hard to eat until she was about 3.

Gotta give it a go tho. Nothing like a home made burger; YUM!

Leeeza · 08/04/2008 15:45

Only has 4 front teeth so have no idea really how he's gonna chew them?

ILiketoMarmiteMarmite · 08/04/2008 15:48

I'd give it to him, but without the ketchup as someone said, too vinegary / processed, but a nice homemade burger would be quite soft, not too chewy. They sound yum!

geordieminx · 08/04/2008 15:50

ds is one next month loves meatballs etc - although he has 8 teeth. No harm in trying

halogen · 09/04/2008 14:52

My daughter's been enjoying meatballs which are only spherical burgers for about six months (she's 19 months old). Definitely give it a go.

Leeeza · 10/04/2008 20:00

Shall try one tomorrow for lunch n see how he gets on - How do you make the meatballs lucicle - do i use same recipe as burgers only make them little n cook them in, maybe, a tomato sauce with onion and passata or something like that?

OP posts:
halogen · 11/04/2008 19:20

I just chop up a spring onion really finely and some herbs (parsley, thyme, chives, whatever really) and mash with the mince. I fry them gently for about ten minutes and serve with pasta and a vegetable-loaded tomato sauce. Tomato sauce with onion and passata sounds lovely. I often put sweet potato in tiny cubes in mine as it's loaded with vit C and tastes pleasantly sweet.

Hulababy · 11/04/2008 19:22

At a year old DD was pretty much eating whatever we had, just cut into smaller pieces. So I would think burgers would be fine. A tiny bit of Worcestershire sauce is not going to be an issue IMO.

halogen · 11/04/2008 20:30

I meant to say, Leeeza, your burger recipe sounds really nice and I definitely plan to try the red pepper addition.
