What can I do with these leftover soft figs?

Bought a packet for a baked gnocchi/dolcelatte/fig/hazelnut thing and have most of the bag leftover. Apparently they need to be used within a week!

Any ideas beyond just eat them as they are?

Brucey bonus for ideas that can be frozen or are healthy!

I like a fig and mozzarella salad. Figs, baby mozzarella, cherry tomatoes and spinach with a French dressing. Served with warm focaccia

Cut them up and put in flapjack? Also you can definitely eat them for longer than that. I have dried fruit from months and months ago.

They're not really dry... I do keep proper dried fruit forever!

Good idea though. I made nigellas breakfast bars last night. Should've used them in those!

On the list, thanks.

I remember a pizza express salad from 20 years ago that was figs but with ricotta actually. I was obsessed!

Soak them in orange juice (or sherry!), mix with sliced almonds, warm up in the microwave and eat with ice cream. Yum.

WhamBamThankU · 13/06/2024 21:15

Cook them down into a chutney?

ChrisPPancake · 13/06/2024 22:51

Fig roll (not like the biscuits!) https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/fudgy-fig-roll

I used less cream (around half I think). Not sure about freezing because I haven't tried.

Can I have your gnocchi recipe please @Donutbed ?

Fudgy fig roll recipe | Good Food

The flavours of the traditional biscuit are turned into a Swiss roll, with added nutmeg, cinnamon, banana in the sponge and a touch of fig jam

Fig scones can be frozen.

Depending how large they are, I do this with fresh figs. Put a cross in the top, add a piece of blue cheese and wrap on proscuitto. Grill till the proscuitto is crispy. Serve on a bed of salad/rocket and drizzle with balsamic or balsamic glaze with a sprinkle of toasted pine nuts. You could chop the same ingrediants and make a salad.

Make fig jam or chutney.

There’s an Ottolenghi recipe for shoulder of lamb with figs and pistachios, it’s amazing but fairly involved so not really something you cook just to use up a packet!

Please can you share the gnocchi recipe? Sounds fab!

Donutbed · 13/06/2024 23:59

@mminipie it's from the quick roasting tin!

Gnocchi in a bowl. Pour over just boiled water. Leave for a few mins. Drain.

Mix 100g creme fraiche with gnocchi (I used greek yogurt instead, just as good(.

Put in pan. Crumble packet of dolcelatte on top. Put quartered figs on top (about four). Drizzle honey on figs. Chopped hazelnuts on top. Bake - about 180 for 25 mins. I do it in the air fryer.

Serve with rocket mixed with lemon juice and olive oil.

Proper comfort food.

I couldn't find fresh figs hence buying soft not quite dry figs which I put in just boiled water to soften further for a few hours.

Lovely, thank you!

DreamTheMoors · 14/06/2024 00:12

When I was 16, in the 100F+ California heat, I packed figs. The smell of the wax they coated them with, the tedious way we had to pack them — I’ll never eat another fig for the rest of my life.
But fig jam is the best.

Eat with Parma ham, rocket, and Caesar salad or blue cheese dressing.

Poach with any combination of apples, pears, apricots, sultanas, dates, orange segments, honey. Serve cold with Greek yoghurt.

Chop and mix with walnuts, chopped celery, finely sliced white cabbage or bitter leaves, cubes of apple, add a garlic mayonnaise dressing and serve with flaked smoked mackerel fillets. Also goes well with sliced boiled ham.

Make a salad with the following: rocket, cherry tomatoes halved, red onion, feta in cubes, cashew nuts, roasted figs, roasted sweet potatoes in cubes. A little sprinkling of balsamic vinegar. This is a recipe from Leaf in Liverpool and they use the hazelnut oil and orange juice dressing I think though sometimes they seem to change the menu. No balsamic if you use the dressing.

PrimalLass · 14/06/2024 06:08

I would just sit and eat them!

Donutbed · 14/06/2024 17:47

I have some prosciutto in the fridge and some very nice balsamic vinegar from Modena so I'll make a salad first! Will go buy some rocket.

Also like the idea of poaching and serving with yogurt so I can have that for breakfast.

Poach & serve with nuts/toasted oats etc over yogurt for breakfast

Healthy & not lots of extra waste

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 15/06/2024 23:12

Like @PrimalLass , I'd eat them as they are. My favourite fruit!
