Preferably easy to prepare and child friendly. My daughter is fascinated with China, and although a fussy eater she has asked me to make some Chinese recipes. Hopefully it will be a good way to expand her palette! Thanks in advance

The Recipetin Eats website has some good Chinese recipes.

clare8allthepies · 03/06/2024 22:19

They say themselves it’s not traditional Chinese cuisine but if you’re after takeaway style food I can’t recommend Ziangs food workshop on YouTube enough. I have both of the cookbooks and use them all the time. Probably not the best for my waistline but delicious!

TheLadyIsAVamp · 04/06/2024 02:55

I'm always recommending this but it's honestly so tasty, cheap and easy. My Chinese friend made me it once years ago and I was blown away with how good it was. The website is great too and you'll get lots of ideas.

Egg & tomato stir fry

I also love making a Chinese chicken noodle or chicken and sweetcorn soup. Ready in minutes and delicious.

Ziangs recipes are amazing. Big fan of Khins Kitchen here also.

Sesame oil became the game changer for me for stir fry recipes

This is really tasty. I double the amount of lemon and add a bit more honey.

That looks delicious.

Thanks everyone, some delicious recipes. Do you think it's OK to use shaoxing wine in cooking for the kids...7 and 2 year old?

Yes that'll be okay.

Keep the recipes coming, I'm liking this thread too

I do a sticky chicken recipe

Inch of ginger chopped
garlic chopped
tomato purée
Worcestershire sauce
soy sauce
golden syrup

Marinate chicken
fry chicken-add rest of sauce

serve with egg fried rice (cook rice, fry spring onion and an egg, add rice and soy sauce.)

ohfourfoxache · 04/06/2024 08:52

Cucumber chicken:

skin/de-seed cucumber, cut into pieces and sprinkle with salt (put in sieve to drain)

Cut chicken into small chunks, dust with cornflour

Oil in wok, add garlic ginger and spring onion - fry 30 seconds

add chicken - brown off

Add shaoxing and low salt soy sauce. Rinse cucumber and add to wok

cover and simmer for 5-10 minutes - sauce should be slightly thick and glossy

it’s absolutely delicious

Kwoklyn Wan's cookbooks. Delicious recipes, very simple to make.
My favourite is a chicken dish called Wandering Dragon.

Definitely give Ziangs Food Workshop a follow, easy to follow and takeaway style if that’s what you’re after - though they do traditional Chinese recipes too (careful if the kids are there as he’s a bit sweary on his Facebook reels, think the ones with his mum on YouTube are ok though)

I add peas to the rice and also air fry (you can oven cook though) broccoli and cauliflower (drizzle with olive oil, S&P) for the veg.

Gok Wans recipe's are actually very good aswell! Lots available online. Here are a few.

If you want to learn more about Asian cooking there’s a great book called Wok by Kenji Lopez-Alt. It explains all about the ingredients and methods, so it’s much easier to whip something up with what’s in your fridge.

I agree, I've got the Complete t/a book.
Also got his brother Gok's book .
And a Ken Hom that I've used a lot, & is possibly more authentic but more complicated.

You can but hair a duck and pancakes in most supermarkets these days and they are delicious with added cucumber and spring onions. Do a Chinese instead buffet dinner with a few snack packs with spring rolls, prawn toast etc

Anything by Fushia Dunlop but she doesn't have any recipes on her website. I really like Grace Young too https://graceyoung.com/

Christine Ho is a Hong Kong Chinese blogger living in Australia. She's got recipies in both Chinese and English. It's a mix of HK food with some HK/British or HK/Australian styled food. https://en.christinesrecipes.com/ The HK/British food is very popular with my kids. It's food like bolognese on rice. Tomato or creamy pasta sauce baked with egg fried rice. Egg tarts.

You can find lots of youtube. On regular rotations here are Sweet and Sour chicken, Mapo Tofu, General Tso's chicken, Strange Flavour chicken. A lot of vegetable stir fries. Or try a stir fry noodle like Singapore noodles.

I don't count stir fried rice because it is what I cook when I have lots of left overs and quite something quick.

SpringBunnies · 04/06/2024 12:00

On Youtube, for example this one https://www.youtube.com/@MadeWithLau

Maxifly · 04/06/2024 12:14

People have posted some good quick meal ideas so far. But one of my favourites is a casserole style dish, so it's one for when you have more time. Stewing beef cooked till tender with lots of garlic and ginger. Pieces of leek and fresh tomatoes with sugar on, then stir fry meat and veg, add dark soy sauce, some of the beef stock then a lot of black pepper. Ideal with rice.

ChrisPPancake · 04/06/2024 12:24

Dc (at a similar age to your eldest) made spring rolls at school. Not sure how authentic they are but they're pretty easy and have been a family favourite ever since.

Grate 1 carrot, slice pepper, slice spring onions and add. a couple of generous handfuls of bean sprouts. Add 2 tablespoons soy sauce, 1 tablespoon honey, I tablespoon sesame oil and mix. Spread a sheet of filo pastry with sesame oil and place another on top. Cut into 3 (or 6, depending on the size of your sheet and the size you want your rolls). Dollop the mixture along one wide side, fold in the ends then roll up. Once all done glaze with sesame oil and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake 180 until golden (15-20 mins).

You can mix up the veg with others you like. We've also done them with pre-cooked shredded chicken or chunks of tofu in.
