Homemade iced coffee

So I love an iced coffee or costa frappe type drink but cannot afford to buy these daily.

I have tried using instant coffee whisked up with ice and adding skimmed milk then a small amount of the 'Skinny food company' creamer which is nice but makes me bloated and is too sweet.

I've seen several tik tok videos that contain cold foam and coffee mate but I'm in the UK and not familiar with these and equally don't want to add loads of sugar or calories to my drink.

How do you make yours?
Sun is out and I need to get practicing Brew

I make a shot of Nespresso and shake it in a cocktail shaker with milk and ice.

Ice cold milk. Camp Coffee syrup. Blend until properly fluffy and pour over ice smashed with a rolling pin over a ziplock covered with a teatowel. Inexpensive and lovely.

Can also be tweaked with ice in the blender (or a slug of Coole Swan or Baileys if you drink).

Another one who uses nespresso and ice. Skimmed milk and sugar free syrup ruin it for me though.

Whole milk is best but we usually have semi. And a good quality syrup helps

Oat milk rather than dairy milk makes all the difference to me - it's much creamier and I don't feel I have to add ice cream to make it a treat.

BusyMintCrab · 19/05/2024 11:58

Those skinny food things are full of shite. Monin do good syrups.

I just do a Nespresso pod over ice and add cold milk. Before I had the Nespresso I used to make a cafetière and keep it in the fridge for a few days to add to my milk/ice! Or you could do instant with a small amount of hot water and add milk.

Big scoop of vanilla icecream. Double shot of espresso. Couple of ice cubes. Mix til ice mostly melted. Top up with a bit of milk. Yum.

When you say iced coffee without any extra sugar or calories, do you mean a black coffee type drink? There’a a few ways of making that. Cold brew is probably the most popular and easiest, and doesn’t take any specialty equipment, but you do lose flavours from the coffee with a cold extraction. If you have an espresso machine you can add that to iced water, or if not you can make a facsimile of an iced americano with an aeropress or moka pot to make a concentrated coffee. Or if you wanted iced brewed coffee then depending on what equipment you have, you can brew that with a higher ratio of coffee to water than usual, and pour the coffee over ice to cool it. I like James Hoffmann’s iced V60 method.

Anything that starts with instant coffee is always going to taste shit! Use a proper shot or two of espresso, shake up with milk (another fan of oat milk here) and ice. Maybe a bit of brown sugar or honey or maple syrup if you want a bit of sweetness.

LittleMy77 · 19/05/2024 12:02

I make a big cafetière of strong coffee, cool it down dump it in a jug and then add about 1/3rd of the jug with ice cubes and store it in the fridge. When I want a coffee, I then add a bit of milk and sugar to a glass, with about 1/4 ice cubes

It has to be properly cooled down, or its absolute shit (imo) the amount of coffee shops here that seem to think dumping a double espresso over ice will do the trick, makes me clutch my pearls (I lived in the US for a while, where decent ice coffee was a dietary summer staple of mine)

QuestionableMouse · 19/05/2024 12:04

The thing is, the one you buy from costa or wherever are loaded with sugar, fat and calories. That's how they taste so good.

Trying to recreate that at home with low calories is never going to taste the same.

FrenchFancie · 19/05/2024 12:24

I make a Cypriot style one - whisk up a big spoon of instant coffee with cold water till it froths, then add more cold water and milk and ice. There is a Greek style frappe maker with a special whisk that I brought home with me. Not 100% sure how you would replicate this with a uk blender but should be possible.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 19/05/2024 12:29

Shot of espresso, sugar free/low calorie syrup (I have Monin and Sweet freedom), milk and ice cubes makes an iced latte.

mindutopia · 20/05/2024 12:34

I literally make coffee in a cafetiere, leave to cool (you can make it the night before, including as cold press) and then I add milk and ice. In a rush, I'd do instant coffee, with a tiny bit of boiling water to mix, then add milk and ice.

You could get a milk frother and froth if you want the frothed milk. All the other stuff is usually fake flavours and sweetener and a bit ick.

Ice in a glass
add oat milk
add double espresso
