Using an American recipe, how many ounces or grams of dry ingredients equal 1 cup?
TIA

google it?

Jbck · 02/04/2008 10:13

I've tried & I can only find for liquids but it seems an awful lot for dry ingredients.

i know 1 cup = 240 ml will have a look around as have a conversion chart saved somewhere

meridian · 02/04/2008 12:22

there is this what are you trying to measure?

Furball · 02/04/2008 12:32

if the whole recipe is in cups - just use a teacup then all the proportions remain the same

Oblomov · 02/04/2008 12:38

Barefoot Contessa always uses cups and I couldn't work out the quantities. As you say, the cup of liquids seems very different to a cup of flour. I watch with interest.

Jbck · 02/04/2008 13:01

Furball it's not unfortunately there are grams & cups. It's the rocky road one on this board. here

It depends on the dry ingredient - a cup is a measure of volume rather than weight IYSWIM, so for example a cup of feathers would weigh less than a cup of lead.

If it helps, a cup is 8 fluid ounces so if you have a measuring jug I would suggest putting your dry ingredient in so that it reaches the 8 floz level.

meridian · 02/04/2008 13:11

jbck- LOL yup thats mine! I would say in that case use a tea cup or coffee cup as furball says.. its an easy recipe

the mashmallows was pretty much the whole package of mini marshmallows.. ninus the ones that DS stole... and the pecans were aproxamitly the whole small package... about 100g from sainsburys... the tablespoon measurements were jsut that a tablespoon

Furball · 02/04/2008 15:05

Puppydogtails - reminds me of brother when I was about 10 asking me which weighed more a ton of feathers or a ton of lead - I obviously voted for the feathers

shrooms · 03/04/2008 00:42

8 fluid ounces is a cup, but dry ingredients depend on the ingredient! Flour would be about 150g I think...

3littlefrogs · 03/04/2008 00:49

You can't convert american recipes in cups to weights. The recipe is worked out in volume - ie the number of cups of each ingredient. Different ingredients have completely different weights per identical volume, so it just can't be done. As long as you use the same cup for measuring it should work fine.

I shall report back when it's made. Not a big fan of nuts in chocolate so I'll be substituting pecans for cherries. Thanks all.

I got my cousin to bring me an american Jug with cup measures on back from the States.

1 cup white flour = 5oz 142g
1 cup wholemeal flour = 5 1/2oz 156g
1 cup granulated sugar = 7oz 198g

Butter

4 tablespoons=1/2 stick=1/4 cup = 2oz

8 tablespoons=1 stick= 1/2 cup = 4oz

Hope this helps

Jbck · 03/04/2008 21:21

jennster you angel

I got these from the back of my american recipe book.

1 cup packed brown sugar (light or dark) 7oz = 198g

1 cup icing sugar 4oz = 113g

1 cup cocoa powder 3oz = 85g

Apparently Americans don't routinely have scales in their kitchens

jennster · 03/04/2008 22:14

And you're welcome

meridian · 04/04/2008 15:30

jennster-- I'm american and I have lived here for 9 years and still used cups and never heard of a scale till I came here to live... my MIL tried to show me how to measure stuff and it didn't take... luckily my mom brought me a measuring cup as wedding present.

hana · 04/04/2008 16:10

I still don't have a set of scales after being in the uk for 11 years !!

hana · 04/04/2008 16:11

I should qualify that as I have stacks of american/cdn cookery books, or use epicuroius.com

scales? pah!
