Making Sushi

Hello, my children who walk home solo (11&13) eat so much between getting home and me getting home! It's fine because they then have clubs and their big dinner later, but as children who were raised abroad, they are obsessed with sushi (but it's so expensive in the uk!) and I wondered about making it at home as a snack...

Cucumber I can (sort of) do, but if I'm going to make salmon or tuna which type do I buy? Is it the sashimi from the sushi section anyway (ie extremely expensive if I mess up😂) or would they sell in the fish section?

And for California maki any recos for crab sticks- are the frozen ones ok?

I really don't want this to be one of my cooking ideas to save money where I end up spending more on the at home version 😂

Thanks

You can get packs of smoked salmon in the fish section - about £2.25 for 100g if you don't mind "trimmings" which is fine if you are going to roll rice around it.

That should be enough for at least a dozen pieces of sushi roll so yes you would definitely save money!

I wouldn't buy raw fish over the counter for sashimi as they are not sashimi grade and may lead to food poisoning. Canned tuna should be fine. I think there's a sushi that's made with tuna and mayo.

My kids love california maki too! I also do a luncheon meat with carrots and cucumber version that's more like a Korean gimbap.

My local Waitrose has a fresh sushi section, and I asked the staff about the fish.
They were adamant that it wasn't the same as from the adjacent fresh fish section, & had to be specially ordered.

We use packets of smoked salmon trimmings for our sushi. Also tinned crab and tinned tuna works well.

I buy sushi grade salmon and tuna from a fishmongers - I always specify that it's for sushi. I'm not sure what the exact difference is, but I trust the fishmonger knows.

We make sushi at home with our kids, they're excellent at rolling makis and handrolls!

We are going to try this.

You can buy sushi grade fish, usually frozen but sometimes fresh, from any number of fishmongers online and have it delivered. That usually works out cheaper than buying it from a supermarket

Sorry, slightly off-topic, this video on youtube gave me several ideas for different ways of doing makis

I’ve never bought sushi grade fish. We make sushi all the time. I normally get in the rice, tuna, salmon trimmings, seafood sticks, peppers/cucumber, cream cheese. And then obviously the nori, sesame seeds and soy sauce.

Mine loves sushi, so I've made it for him for years - a rice cooker with a timer makes it so easy. But as a snack, Ongiri with tinned tuna and mayo is very simple and easy to do (plus cheap if you buy 5kg bags of sushi rice and a store cupboard make) or maki rolls with precooked chicken breast, cucumber or avocado.
If I was being fancier, tempura prawns is popular here, but thats a meal, not afterschool snack as would proper fish

You need sashimi grade fish which means it's safe to be eaten raw. I buy from an Asian supermarket or can ask a fishmonger to order in for you. It is expensive though. You can just do a simple omelette filling, cucumber, tuna, crabsticks. I usually make kimbap which is the Korean version of sushi, using cooked meats or tuna inside. I actually have this as a firm favourite playdate activity for my 9 year old, set up ingredients and all the children love having a go making it for their dinner!
