Why can’t I use my bl@@dy b’stard rice cooker???

Despite experimenting with different amounts of water, every time the rice is either under cooked or stuck to the bottom 🤬 Honestly the ruddy thing is supposed to make life easier and instead it leads to crushing disappointment and a burning sense of inadequacy.

Can anyone tell me what I’m doing wrong? PLEASE.

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor do you drain the rice first?
I mean I’m still aiming to perfect the rice cooker but curious to try this too!

Basmati rice is 1 cup of rice ,2 cups of water. Rinse the rice first then 2 cups of boiling water. When it's cooked all the water will be absorbed . Then use the tea towel or kitchen paper and it'll dry it out further . Fluff it up with a fork before serving.

I just rinse uncooked rice well under the cold tap, boil up on the hob with excess water, when cooked to taste rinse well with boiling water and then leave to steam for a couple of minutes before fluffing up and serving.

something to do with mercury being absorbed into the rice

Where the heck is the mercury coming from?

It’s arsenic levels that are of concern, not mercury, and it’s found at higher levels in brown rice than in white rice.

Arsenic in brown rice: do the benefits outweigh the risks?

Im not sure if the levels are actually an issue but there are lots of articles about mercury and other heavy metals in rice.

SabrinaThwaite · 20/04/2024 13:39

Ah, OK, I knew about the arsenic issue as that’s Benn well known for a while. Mercury makes sense as being taken up by rice plants as well.

We recently discovered we can cook rice in our Instant Pot. Game changer as it frees up a hob ring and means I don't have to watch it whilst doing other kitchen tasks. It comes out perfectly every time.

Cheeesus · 20/04/2024 16:47

I thought basmati was 1.5 water : 1 rice
Mine’s good on that.

InAMillion · 20/04/2024 17:02

I've been using my Sistema microwave rice cooker for years now

I rinse the rice a couple of times till the water runs clear

1 cup of rice to 2 cups of water for 15 mins

Perfect every time

Just get boil in the bag. Perfect every time!

This.

mitogoshi · 20/04/2024 17:05

The minimum mine can cook is 2 cups (us standard measuring cups) then fill up to the 2 cup mark on the bowl. Perfect every time

It depends on the type of Rice.
We buy ours in large bags from the Asian supermarkets. Some of the aged basmatis need more water than a 2/1 ratio. The cheaper ones & American rice needs less water.

Cheeesus · 20/04/2024 17:57

Yes, mine is just supermarket basmati.

PineappleTime · 20/04/2024 18:07

I do 2:1 water to rice, rinse under cold water first in a seive and it's perfect - need to make 2 portions minimum due to the size of the cooker, could have done with a smaller one but it was a gift. Larger portions reduces the risk of sticking which you do get a bit of with 2 portions but mix it up and the sticky bits are imperceptible!

Another one who doesn't get it. I'm the world's worst cook but I can boil rice in a saucepan, it must be the simplest thing you can cook. Why on earth waste money on a rice cooker?

I like being able to set the timer (24h one) and be able to come back when I'm ready/finished work/getting up in the morning to make lunch/etc and it's all done to perfection just when I want it.

It's also freeing up a ring on the hob when I can't fit anything else on it when using the wok, means no hanging around in a hot environment, uses less expensive fuel and can also be used as a mini slow cooker instead of needing to fill a large pressure multicooker.

Bing123 · 20/04/2024 18:33

I use the Jamie method, boil rice for 8 minutes, steam for 7, no need to measure the water.

Shedoesasshepleases · 20/04/2024 18:51

I have a Sistema microwave rice steamer. Costs about £10. Put a cup of rice (I use Tilda basmati bought in bulk) plus just over the cup of cold water in. Microwave for 10 mins take out fluff up and your done. Never fails.
