Chorizo use in 2 days ?

healthadvice123 · 16/04/2024 20:51

Just checked the chorizo in fridge taht we opened approx 2/3 weeks ago to see if still useable as assumed it had 2or 3 weeks to use once open , but it actually said 2 days , so I have binned it.
am i imagining it or did chorizo used to have longer ? Or have i picked up some weird kind? In future would we be able to freeze it as no way we would use a whole chorizo in 2 days.

Oh, dried sausages like that last for ages, really. Why did you even bin it?

Mimrr · 16/04/2024 21:12

Yes makes no sense. People used to hang up these dried preserved meats in their barns all winter.
We have some Italian cured meats in our fridge which had about two months use by on the packet but of course ‘eat within 3 days of opening’. I just ignore.

MonsteraMama · 16/04/2024 21:15

Silly to bin it because an arbitrary date told you to, cured meat lasts yonks, I've eaten chorizo months past it's "use by" date and it's been absolutely fine. Cut the dried exposed end bit off and the rest is completely fine.

SpringOfContentment · 16/04/2024 21:20

Nah, chorizo gets opened, half used, then sits in the fridge for a few weeks before being finished.

It's a cured meat. 2 days seems weird!

healthadvice123 · 16/04/2024 23:35

I agree 2 days is silly but i assumed maybe ai had picked up some special kind and as 2 people in the house have delicate stomach issues, I do err on side of caution.plus i ended up in hospital with food poisoning whilst on holiday once so that makes me more careful as wouldn’t want to be ill like that again.
im going to check all the chorixo now as im sure they say longer on some or certainly used to
But then could of sworn bacon was 5/7 days or something yet now its less . If things go off so quick then they need to start selling smaller packs .

Do you mean an actual sausage-y one, or the sliced stuff that sits with the ham, pastrami packets in the supermarket? I might be more cautious with the latter (by which I mean cook it rather than put in sarnies, not just outright bin it).

Sandwichblock · 17/04/2024 11:49

It's nonsense, I doesn't really even need to be refrigerated, that's the point. However if I saw that on it, I might wonder if it was Chorizo style or flavour rather than properly dried and I'm cautious with meat, where I wouldn't be with other things.

mrssquidink · 17/04/2024 11:50

If it’s a whole sausage type chorizo, I buy one and then it stays in the fridge until all used up (usually at least a month) with no ill effect. I’d be a bit more cautious if it was already sliced or chopped.

Georgyporky · 17/04/2024 19:46

They are not refrigerated in Spanish shops.

Silly to throw it away, as they freeze well.

rainontherooftop · 17/04/2024 19:47

I agree with the others, mine stays in the fridge for weeks on end while I cut bits off for cooking and I've never been poisoned by it.

NisekoWhistler · 17/04/2024 19:48

Last night we ate chorizo that was supposed to be eaten before January 2024 and here I am still typing

WonderingWanda · 17/04/2024 19:53

I've never looked at the date, just leave it in the fridge till I need some more, probable 2 or 3 weeks.... we're all still alive.

Mumaway · 17/04/2024 19:53

Unless it was a lack of the raw 'cooking chorizo' I definitely would have kept using it until it was gone

healthadvice123 · 21/04/2024 08:48

I have no idea what tyoenit was as in taw, just the normal sausage one you buy in supermarket, i will be looking a bit closer at them as we have always had them and used over a week or so as who generally uses a whole one, nit sire why this one had 2 days but threw as not normal one we have so thought muts be something different about this one for some reason.

Why did you bin it, cured meats are specifically cured to preserve them. Use by dates are all a scam to make you waste and buy more - I never check them. I’ve never been sick. I wish they’d be removed from products and people use their nose and eyes

healthadvice123 · 21/04/2024 09:05

@Peonies12 not eveything is visible or smells though thats the thing. And i have had severe food poisoning and been hospitalised once and that was enough so I am a litle cautious with certain things.
i assumed as it said 2 days maybe we had brought some fresh kind or something and not cured, i think they should have to be accurate on the packaging with the safety and if it longer but needs to be seale dup or whateveR just state. Its binned now and done , in future i will look for ones with the longest shelf life and or freeze of not using.
