Dessert idea(s) for 12 people, please!

We're going to a music evening at friends, soon. I tell you this only to make it clear that the focus of the evening isn't going to be the food!

One of the guests is bringing the main course, which will be moussaka. I've volunteered to do the dessert.

So it needs to be something that I can easily transport - it's about an hour's drive from us. I can't easily do individual desserts, as I don't have 12 of anything. (Although I do have a muffin tray that has 12 deep holes)

I'm a confident cook, but don't often do desserts. I have one dessert option in mind, which is Delia's chocolate truffle torte, but I have made that a lot so fancy making something else.

I don't think there are any specific dietary requirements to worry about.

Given that moussaka is usually pretty rich, I'm thinking that we need something light (which also rules out the chocolate truffle torte, which is very, very rich!)

Any ideas?

Pavlova? You could take the meringue and fruit and whip the cream at the venue and bung it together there.

As the main course is Greek why not make a Greek dessert? Eg: baklava, portokalopitta or galadoboureko (custard pie)?
Or:
Tiramisu
Biscoff cheesecake
Brownies
Trifle
Apple crumble
Coffee and Walnut cake

Just what I was going to say. Easy to make it large.

Pavlova is a good idea - especially as with fruit it's lighter.

I had thought about Greek desserts @geoger, but they all seemed a bit rich too (at least the ones I'd Googled!)

I would make lemon possets , can do them in glasses or any old ramekins and pots , don’t have to match . Easy and cheap

I make this orange. lemon, honey and almond cake as a dessert for non cheese eaters and have served it with some fresh raspberries, strawberries and blueberries in a bowl at the side and some natural yoghurt with some of the lemon and orange juice mixed in for those that need something creamy to go alongside. You can make the cake in advance

Alternatively I have made polenta cakes that always go down well with guests too and can be made in advance

Yoghurt, almond and honey cake by Jeremy Lee

Zesty and wonderfully simple to create – try serving it as a pud with rhubarb and custard

Could also do the pavlova as small individual ones. Dice up the 3 types of fruit so people can choose which they want. Some whipped cream in another bowl and grated chocolate to finish.

A non-baked cheesecake - like Delia's fresh lemon cheesecake with frosted grapes, or a key lime pie.

A large fruit tart with creme pat filling and fresh fruit topping

Tiramisu (Delia recipe again is great)

Trifle - either black forest or caramelised orange

Black forest gateau cake

Banoffee pie
Key lime pie
Fruit tart

Profiteroles? Saves on cutlery and plates too.

Sticky toffee pudding - deli as little ones are fail safe and delicious

BIWI · 11/04/2024 21:48

I love sticky toffee pudding! But I think it would be a bit too heavy after moussaka, unfortunately.

i second lemon posset or a cheese board.

Or just any old type of cake. I often have to cook gluten free and frequently make a Spanish almond cake.

CornishPorsche · 11/04/2024 21:50

Buy packs of meringue nests, two tins of scooty cream and a pile of strawberries / kiwi / raspberries. Chop up the fruit, serve on the table.

Let everyone plate up their own fruit and cream!

QueenOfHiraeth · 11/04/2024 21:51

I was going to suggest a no-bake cheesecake, lemon tastes lighter and you could put some berries with it to make it even fresher
I use an old recipe very similar to this

No Bake Lemon Cheesecake

This recipe for No Bake Lemon Cheesecake with condensed milk is just sensational and so crazily easy It is life changing! #lemoncheesecake

What about a lemon tart?

Cookerhood · 11/04/2024 22:03

Lemon posset or lemon tarr

BarnacleBeasley · 11/04/2024 22:03

I would do a chocolate mousse, but in a massive bowl instead of individual ones, and people could just dig out their own portion with a spoon.

FinallyHere · 11/04/2024 22:14

My favourite is to set out sharing boards.

Sometimes just sweet, other times cheese board and sweets

Set out dates, Turkish delight, individually wrapped chocolate bars, Benedict's butter mints peppermint creams. Anything that takes your fancy. Great leftovers, too
