Why would anyone buy Pesto?

I am so cross.

For 30 years I have thought that I hated pesto. Turns out I hate the nasty vinegary oily nasty yak that you can buy.

Whizzed up fresh basil, garlic, pine nuts and olive oil with parmesan is blardy lovely!

My god I have a lot of pesto to eat to make up for lost time.

I've never had a vinegary pesto.
How bizarre.

MehgaLegs · 28/03/2008 20:18

expat - it's very easy, just a basic vinigarette with olive oil and balsamic blitzed with lots of fresh basil, garlic and pine nuts. I usually add a bit of sugar. It keeps for ages and gets better the longer it's cooked.

Nothing special really but it is gooood, especially with little cherrie toms and parmesan cheese.

pointydog · 28/03/2008 20:18

pesto is a little sloppy

MehgaLegs · 28/03/2008 20:18

not cooked - kept I mean!

Glass of wine on an empty tum - soz!

moondog · 28/03/2008 20:19

That will do Pointy.

MehgaLegs · 28/03/2008 20:19

I am put of scala by the really shite ad!

ExtraFancy · 28/03/2008 20:25

My 7mo DS loves pesto and Greek yoghurt on pasta spirals. Buggered if I'm going to make it myself while he's grizzling at me from across the kitchen though

WanderingTrolley · 28/03/2008 20:29

THose of you who think you are buying vinegarry pesto are, in fact, buying mint sauce. You fools.

M&S do a better pesto than Sacla imo.

christ alive I thought moondog had started this thread

then she poles in halfway through and says she buys Sacla

PestoMonster · 28/03/2008 20:34

Pointy, I am not sloppy

[indignant emoticon]

I am lovely and firm

fishie · 28/03/2008 20:34

waitrose one is lovely. always thought i hated it until had that. i use it to cheer up sauces or salads etc, not by itself usually.

once bought a pot of properly made fresh from a market and more or less ate the whole thing with a spoon. too dangerous.

Tapster · 28/03/2008 20:50

Because its the only thing my DD of 16 months will reliably eat. I never want to see Sacla organic red pesto again in my life...

purpleduck · 28/03/2008 21:05

waitrose red pepper one is yummalicious

fab stirred in risotto
[mmmm]

carmenelectra · 28/03/2008 21:08

Always buy it. Red or green. Had Sacla this wk, (seems v.popular!)or buy Asda/Tesco or whatever. Wouldnt fiddle making it!

MoreSpamThanGlam · 28/03/2008 21:11

Love sacla red peston on french bread with real butter (dreams of one day eating it again...slurp).

JingleyJen · 28/03/2008 21:13

love pesto..lived on it for 3 years with value pasta at uni..

motherinferior · 28/03/2008 21:15

Cappucino, I was going to post that!

I personally adore the Sacla coriander pesto precisely for its brash acidity.

And we buy it because, yep, the Inferiorettes get fed pasta and pesto and peas very, very frequently after their father has got them in through the door at 6pm and they need their tea NOW and strangely enough he is not madly keen on the idea of faffing around with the blender.

hoxtonchick · 28/03/2008 21:16

he's a lightweight MI .

motherinferior · 28/03/2008 21:18

I do make it sometimes . And it is MUCH nicer.

hoxtonchick · 28/03/2008 21:20

infinitely. but i appear to be the only one on this thread who never buys jars of the stuff. i need bundle to come & agree with me .

Kindersurprise · 28/03/2008 21:21

I have only made it myself once as I do not have a blender and it was a lot of work with the morser and thingummy?

What is that useless thing handy gadget called that some idiot a lovely relative gave us as a wedding present?

Carmenere · 28/03/2008 21:21

Can I just point out that there is a HUGE difference between jarred red pesto and jarred green pesto. Green pesto has to be fresh otherwise it is just turns to sludge, red pesto suits jars very well indeed as the raw material is already processed and doesn't suffer from being processed iyswim.

carmenelectra · 28/03/2008 21:29

Pestle and mortar. Gosh id love one

sunflowervalley · 28/03/2008 21:30

Tesco finest is a good one with peppers and ricotta.

Always add a blob of creme fraiche in with the pesto and pasta as well.
