Snack and pudding ideas for DS9

greatthatsgreat · 31/03/2024 18:01

This is the list of fruit and veg DS9 will eat (he won't eat anything with a skin on):

Carrots
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Smoothies
Occasionally a peeled and thinly sliced apple
Raisins

He loves smooth pasta sauce so I can hide things in there. We have pasta 3/4 times a week.

I'm getting stuck on snacks and puddings as he won't eat fruit and yoghurt/fruit and custard etc and he won't eat peppers, cucumber, tomatoes etc even with a dip. He only eats peeled and finely sliced carrots which are becoming a bit boring.

I need some inspiration!

Does he like fruit pies/crumbles?

One of DDs favourite puddings is just chopped up apple and whatever berries we have microwaved for 1.5 mins. If it's very sour I add a little honey but otherwise don't. She'll happily eat a hot mushy apple but won't eat a whole one straight from the fruit bowl.

He used to eat stewed apple as a toddler but won’t now.

He doesn’t like the crumble topping.

Does he have to have fruit/veg for snacks and puddings? What about a bit of cheese or chicken or a yoghurt or whatever, protein is quite filling

greatthatsgreat · 31/03/2024 18:39

Yes I agree. It’s the vitamins I worry about I suppose but at least he does eat some veg! x

I make our pasta sauce by oven roasting any veg with have in & blending it down to a thick sauce. That way they have no idea it contains mushrooms, courgettes etc.
You can skin cucumber if he's eat it that way.
Does he eat bananas?
What about berries?

Forgottenmyphone · 31/03/2024 18:44

Courgette muffins https://www.deliciousmagazine.co.uk/recipes/courgette-muffins/

Nomorecoconutboosts · 31/03/2024 18:49

Would he help make an apple pie/tart - get some ready made pastry?
muffins with fruit in - inspired taste website have a strawberry muffin recipe.

how about sliced fruit dipped in chocolate and left to set - start of with apples and branch out with other stuff e.g. orange or banana slices.

if he likes raisins would he try other dried fruit such as apricots?
Or fruit cake - either lightly fruited or a more traditional version?

it’s a reasonable range of veg he eats. Would he try parsnips which are kind of white carrots?

AtleastitsnotMonday · 31/03/2024 19:02

You can still make a smooth pasta source with veg in it. You just to make sure the veg is cooked until really soft and then blitz the hell out of.
Are the carrots cooked or raw?
If you want to get more vitamins in and he's not going to eat other fruit and veg in their regular state it's going to be easier to incorporate them in main dishes.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 31/03/2024 19:03

Sorry didn't read your post properly, ignore my comment on blitzing pasta sauce.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 31/03/2024 19:07

Would a smooth soup be an option?
You say he won't eat veg with dip but how about if the veg was hidden in the dip e.g hummus or guacamole? He could dip breadsticks, toasted pita or things like chicken breasts on skewers.

EnragedHobbyist · 31/03/2024 19:50

Would he eat slaw? You could start with just grated carrot and add in other veg over time? See also cheese savoury- just gradually increase the veg

TheSandgroper · 01/04/2024 06:10

1). He has to eat it and he isn’t bored.

2). Nutritionally, it looks ok. Try some grapes in season, perhaps, as they are just fresh raisins.
3). Kiwi? Cut the top off and scoop like a boiled egg?
4). Soft skinned fruit in season like loquats, apricot, peach, nectarine? Peaches and nectarine can be peeled and sliced (and then marinated in sweet wine, just so you know).
5). My brother eats about the same and does all right.

sashh · 01/04/2024 06:46

If it is the vitamins you are worried about then add a multivitamin to his diet.

Is he involved in the cooking? Sometimes that can help.

What about making the pasta sauce without the pasta and putting some chicken in?

Will he eat eggs?

DcatAnnie · 01/04/2024 08:03

Add split red lentils into pasta sauce.
Chickpeas/Mixed beans out of the can? Ds will eat frozen peas but not cooked.
Celery sticks with cream cheese or peanut butter. Snow peas ? Ds has just started to eat red peppers after being offered them many times.
Check the label but often ice cream has the same amount of sugar as yogurt. Frozen berries?

EwwSprouts · 01/04/2024 11:58

Jacket sweet potato even if he just eats the flesh
Sweet potato & butternut squash makes a good mash (no milk req)

Mango finely sliced
Nuts

Thanks all. Some great ideas here. Yes roasting veg and blitzing it into a passata is a firm fav. I follow 'My Fussy Eater' on Instagram as she has great ways of hiding veg.

I've just bought some Soffrito mix from Waitrose (frozen and finely diced onion, carrot and celery) to add to pasta and mince dishes etc.

Hummus is hit and miss. He's gone off bananas and no to berries as he doesn't like 'skin or bits on'

He likes raw carrots with his sandwiches and cooked ones with his dinner.

He likes scrambled egg.

Writing all this down he does ok really. I give him a Happy Monkey smoothie and he likes smoothie lollies. He has a daily multivitamin.

Have you tried frozen grapes ?
Tinned fruit?

APurpleSquirrel · 01/04/2024 18:30

Could you try cakes which include fruit or veg too?
Banana bread
Carrot cake
Courgettes cake
Beetroot brownies

AperolWhore · 01/04/2024 18:48

Will he eat crackers? A few crackers or breadsticks with some cheese is a fab snack.

What about dried fruit?

broccoli and red lentil fritters are a big hit in our house.

Will he eat rice pudding? Rich tea biscuits with a bit of jam on are an ok pudding, or a simple chocolate mousse.

greatthatsgreat · 05/04/2024 11:58

He rejects anything with a skin on (says urgh skin!) and says no to celery, grapes, kiwi, peppers, peas, sweetcorn, cucumber, courgette and sweet potato.

No to rice pudding or cream cheese. He likes plain scrambled egg.

He likes to help me in the kitchen.

He used to eat peaches and bananas, now they are a no.

Waitrose do a great chefs mix of diced courgettes, tomatoes and onion so I put that into a pasta sauce and whizz it up and he likes that.

It’s literally that and carrots, broccoli and cauliflower on rotation.

He will eat crackers and cheese.

He likes banana bread but he doesn’t know it’s banana bread!

Have you tried frozen bananas on a lolly stick? Literally halve a not overripe banana and shove a lolly stick in it. Then chuck in the freezer. If necessary you could dip in melted choc first. He might like it if he's OK with the taste of banana, but not so much with the texture. Equally, you can make banana "ice-cream" by blending frozen banana chunks.

greatthatsgreat · 05/04/2024 15:49

Fab idea. Thank you. It seems to be all about the texture?

He’s just had 3 pieces of watermelon and some cheese and crackers 👍
