Can you eat fertilised goose eggs?

That's pretty much it really....

Bought four goose eggs from a farmer online and they arrived in great nick and I went back to read the description and it mentions they're fertilised.

My intention was to eat them and hoping it's all ok to do so. I read online it should be ok but hoping a farmer or egg pro can reassure me.

Thanks 🙏

Fertilised as in a loving goose foetus inside them? Or have I misunderstood? Why would you want to eat that?

I can’t get my head around this. I wouldn’t eat a fertilised egg, no. I’m not an egg pro or farmer, though.

Ok so no there isn't a foetus the yolk is there but the goose that laid the egg was helped by a male goose. If it's kept in warm incubator it would become a foetus.

So no foetus just a normal egg but it's fertilized. Just checking if it's editable.

You can eat fertilised hens eggs and ducks eggs, would it not be just the same with geese?

So it’s an embryo. Grim! Can’t see why it wouldn’t be edible if that’s your thing though.

This was my logic too and just wanted to double check here just in case.

@TeaKitten No its not my thing 😆

I didn't realise it was fertilised as I mentioned in my OP. But like PP said you can eat fertilised chicken and duck eggs.

We had a flock of geese. The eggs were great for making cakes

Lunchclub · 28/03/2024 20:34

Yes you can.
Unless you incubate it for a few days there’s no embryo, just a clump of cells that looks pretty much identical to the unfertilised clump of cells on the side of every yolk in every bird egg.
Unless you know what you’re specifically looking for you won’t know the difference between fertilised and unfertilised eggs.

Well this has given me an idea!

Thank you for the suggestion!

Yes you can. We have a flock of chickens with a roooster so all of our eggs are fertile. You can tell because if you look really carefully, knowing what you are looking for, there is a tiny white dot on the yolk when you crack the egg.
In order to get an embryo, it's necessary for a hen to sit on the eggs for 21 days for chicken eggs. I'm not sure how long for goose eggs but probably similar. If the eggs aren't sat on, no chick will ever develop. If they are kept at room temperature, no chick will develop.
They are perfectly safe for eating.
If you are Jewish then the eggs may be more likely to be non kosher as occasionally you get a tiny blood spot but I don't know that much about kosher. I'm not Jewish just vegetarian so I just remove it with a spoon if that happens.

@mydogwantsabone

That's really good information! We cracked it open today and you would have no clue it was fertilised. Tasted amazing too!
