Meals for sporty DS9

DS9 eats OK overall but I struggle with carbs which are key as he burns off energy. He doesn’t like chips/mash and pasta is the only thing he’ll eat heartily. Tonight we are having curry. His brother loves the chicken and curry sauce, the rice and the poppadoms but DS9 will only eat a few mouthfuls of rice, leave the chicken and the sauce and only have a couple of nibbles of the naan. He does like those small baby potatoes (boiled) so could serve with that. The other day I made a cottage pie and he left a lot of the mash. Just pasta and baby potatoes for the moment! I do pasta 3 times a week but I worry his meals are limited as he is tall and slim and always on the go.

We all struggle with our weight so I'm cautious about pasta myself becuase it' shard to get the carbs to other food ratio right. But if he's super sporty and likes pasta, perhaps that's less of an issue. One thing I do is a lot of chunky, substantial pasta sauces. Things like chunks of chorizo and aubergine with a tomato/chilli sauce or sausages with roasted butternut, fennel and some greens. Or a "no-cook" option of ricotta, spinach, garlic, lemon and some smoked or flaked salmon.

What about noodles? We do rice or wok noodles quite often as part of a stir fry or similar and allows us to vary things a bit. Or rice noodles in curry works well.

If he likes potatoes, jackets with something on top? I'm a big believer in doing a salad alongside to help with digestion. We do tuna and cream cheese often, or sometimes bacon and creme fraiche. Obviously beans and cheese is always a quick and easy option and lots of people will stick curry/chilli on a jacket too.

Does he like bread? We buy (or, when I can be bothered, make) flatbreads and use those as the base for all kinds of things. This week we'll be having steak with fried mushrooms and a slaw. I had some leftover lamb a few weeks ago so we did it as as sort of schwarma with leftover lamb, hummus and some griddled aubergines.

Or if he likes wraps, fajita style things? Although again, I'd say that you could stick some curry sauce in a wrap and it would be fine. If you look up bunny chow - it's a South African curry served INSIDE a crust of bread. My point is that the carbs that are traditionally served with a particular meal don't HAVE to be served with that meal.

Oh, I forgot - we also used to do roasted veg or even just roasted tomatoes, with feta/goats cheese/burrata on pasta a lot. I almost never have time for that these days and DS has gone off it but it was a great way to serve pasta with lots of chunky other things that upped the nutrition and balance of the meal.

Does he like noodles...a chicken stir fry with veg and noodles is pretty quick and healthy...and most kids seem to like from my experience?

My DS is very similar OP, something I found very helpful is following competitive swimming threads on MN. Those guys are experts on what to feed their sporty kids and I picked up some really useful tips.

Thank you.

He likes wraps and jackets so could do more of those.

Won't eat lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, tuna or noodles.

I do chorizo and sausage with pasta. To add veg, I roast some and whizz it up into some passata and he loves that.

His absolute favourite meal is gammon with broccoli and carbonara.

The only fruit he'll eat is peeled and thinly sliced apple, raisins and sometimes watermelon. He has a smoothie most days.

So maybe a bacon and sour cream jacket with some cooked greens on the side? or a big pile of cucumber and apple slices?

My Ds will happily eat wraps by themselves so he could just have whatever you're eating, minus the carbs you like, with a wrap to tear into alongside?

How about things that could be served in a pita, haloumi, chicken, falafel? Combine with any veg he'll eat, grated carrot works well or if he'd eat coleslaw that's good too.
How about gnocchi, pasta again but it is different from regular pasta? Really good in a tray bake with sausages, whatever veg and a honey and mustard glaze.
Would he eat fishcakes? The carb is a bit more hidden.
Have you tried him with sweet potato wedges?
Hard taco shells with a mild chilli or fajita mix?
