Quick food hygiene question...

alittleteapot · 27/03/2008 08:56

I was in the middle of making a batch of lentil croquettes () for dd last night when she woke and i had to abandon culinary proceedings. lentil mix inc raw egg got left out for a few hours then into fridge late last night. will it be ok to crack on with them now? feeling a bit paranoid as dp just gave himself food poisioning and dd only 9 months.

TIA

It should be fine unless your kitchen was really hot. Presumably once you've made them they will get cooked anyway, so that will kill any bacteria.

I agree that it should be ok.

However, if you are at all worried, then chuck the rest of the mixture out rather than risk it.

oh thanks. and do you think i shoudl cook the lot now or could i freeze some uncooked?

Maybe cook the lot now and then freeze some of them cooked? Just to make sure if any bacteria or other germs have got in that they get killed. Otherwise some bacteria can survive freezing and continue to multiply once they are defrosted again.

thank you

don't think it matters.

If there are any bacteria in there, then freezing them will make sure they don't reproduce and cooking them will kill them.

So if you freeze them and cook them later, twill be the same as cooking them now.

thank you too.

Well actually freezing them and cooking them later can cause some bacteria to reproduce, as at some point the product will go from a freezing temp to an ideal temp for breeding in (whether that is through defrosting or even cooking from frozen). I know thwe risk is very small though. Cooking them now kills the buggers.

should be fine
just cook them well

Made and all cooked. not the most delicious looking things in the world but hopefully at least they won't make her ill!
