Gravy, when not roasting meat?

How do you buy/make gravy when you’re not doing a roast. For example with sausages and mash? Is there a reasonable instant version? Is bisto ok? Ds has developed a new taste for gravy and as he’s previously been a bit fussy about “sauce” I want to lean into this and provide gravy if I can.

I just use bisto for sausages and mash. Always make proper gravy with a roast but a bit of bisto seems to work fine for sausages.

PipsHip · 09/03/2024 14:32

I just use supermarket own brand. It's fine.

If feeling fancy you can fry some onions slowly in a pan first. A bit of balsamic vinegar in there is nice with sausages too. Then when onions are soft just tip your hot gravy into the pan and mix.

I make Delia's onion gravy, its very easy. Or there is a Jamie Oliver recipe called Make Ahead Gravy which you can make in bulk and freeze.

Dotty2dot · 09/03/2024 14:36

I just use gravy granules. Own brand ones are fine.

idontlikealdi · 09/03/2024 14:40

Bisto. I could drink a mug of bisto happily, especially the chicken one.

I make proper gravy if having a roast but cba for a midweek meal.

I make onion gravy. My Grandma taught me how to make it when I was a child.

yikesanotherbooboo · 09/03/2024 14:45

I make onion gravy too.

tunainatin · 09/03/2024 14:45

I make onion gravy. I think mine's a BBC recipe. You can make lots and freeze.

I’m vegetarian, and make gravy thusly:
Make a roux
Add stock water (incl from simmering chopped onions) till a sauce consistency (goes thick first as when making a white sauce, then thins down)
Add a tbsp or so of marmite, squeeze of tomato purée, bit of red wine if its only for adults
Add the chopped, simmered onions at the end (not earlier or gravy goes lumpy)

Voila!

Knorr gravy granules are quite good.

WestendGrrls · 09/03/2024 14:51

You can get granules and just add boiling water from the kettle and stir.

The old fashioned cardboard packet of bisto that you do on a pan on the stove tastes a bit nicer though, I think.

Offredismysister · 09/03/2024 14:52

I make Delias onion gravy too.

Scampuss · 09/03/2024 15:09

Fro quick sausages and mash I make a lazy onion gravy with a beef stock pot, gravy granules and a dollop of Tracklements onion marmalade.

karmakameleon · 09/03/2024 15:29

Every time I make a roast I freeze leftover gravy to use for sausages or toad in the hole.

Rocknrolla21 · 09/03/2024 15:31

Do people on here not use the sausage juices to make gravy like any other meat? I love sausage gravy!

MoonWoman69 · 09/03/2024 15:37

Sausage juices?! Isn't that just fat? I either slowly fry my sausages on the job or do them on low in a roasting pan in the oven. I've never had juices from sausages in all the years I've been cooking! I'm intrigued!

Snowpaw · 09/03/2024 15:43

I like the Bisto "best" beef gravy - really tasty.

If I've got more time, I slowly fry some red onions, then deglaze the pan with some redwine, let that reduce down and then add in the Bisto best.

Crikeyalmighty · 09/03/2024 15:48

I use bisto best for my H and add a teaspoon of Dijon mustard and I use marigold for me (gluten free)

johnboyo · 09/03/2024 15:53

Onion gravy: bistro is rank

OldTinHat · 09/03/2024 16:27

I use supermarket veggie gravy granules. Yum!

Snugglemonkey · 09/03/2024 16:49

I freeze leftover gravy for this purpose.

Mummyofthewildones · 09/03/2024 16:52

Randomly saw bisto for sausage gravy today. Google says it's new and only in asda atm.

Leftover gravy?? What is that?

seriously though, my family are gravy fiends. I wonder what the pots of pre-made but “fresh” gravy are like? I could portion that up and freeze maybe.

bisto onion gravy is nice with sausage and Mash. Bisto also do a "Best" version of their granules. I don't make great gravy so I use granules

BCBird · 09/03/2024 16:56

Supermarket own brand fine. I'd get low salt
