Can’t face slicing it! Any tips? Have this bread maker and want to go back to making bread again but the effort of slicing it was too much!!

What were you slicing it with? Buy a really decent bread knife and it shouldn't be any effort.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 29/02/2024 20:29

Sorry - what's so difficult about it? Is it that your fresh homemade bread is harder to slice than normal non-sliced bread, or just that you find it a pain to use non-sliced at all?

Weloveflowerss · 29/02/2024 20:30

I use a standard bread knife but maybe I will look at a proper one. And yes just a pain with non sliced one! Also on a side note how do I store the bread if I slice it all at once? Thanks

Have you tried an electric knife?

Watchkeys · 29/02/2024 20:31

Why was such a quick and simple task too much? In what way? Have you got a really heavy bread knife? Were you slicing it with an axe?

JewelTheft · 29/02/2024 20:34

I wouldn't slice it all at once, just when you need it. It will stay fresher longer like that.

TroysMammy · 29/02/2024 20:37

I've got a Lakeland bread slicer gadget but an older version to one they sell. I've also got a knife especially for cutting bread. I get tidy slices each time unless my partner has a go first and started off cutting wonky slices freehand.

Aquamarine1029 · 29/02/2024 20:39

Is your bread knife a stick? I don't understand.

😅

I'm with OP though, hate slicing bread. It's such a chore.

Tessisme · 29/02/2024 20:40

People who are saying it's so easy, how do you cut the bread straight and evenly? My slices look like a wedge on a good day and a dog's hind leg on a bad day. I have one of those slice guide thingummydoodles, but the slices are fat. Good for toast, not so much for sandwiches.

PurBal · 29/02/2024 20:40

Bake rolls? I use the dough function, form into rolls, prove for about 20 minutes and then bake for about 15.

Ok I have a normal breadknife and don't find it a pain! Don't slice it all at once though - it will go stale more quickly.

You need one of these

and an electric bread knife

Synergies · 29/02/2024 20:54

Are you guys standing there and slicing up a whole loaf of bread all at once? That's weird and unnecessary. But yes if you're doing that get a proper, sharp bread knife.

coxesorangepippin · 29/02/2024 20:56

Freeze slightly before slicing?

I slice it so I can freeze it. If you freeze the whole loaf, you have to thaw and eat it all at once. Sliced, you can eat it over weeks.

NotARealWookiie · 29/02/2024 21:05

I highly recommend The Worlds Sharpest Knife.

Total game changer.

UniversalTruth · 29/02/2024 21:50

I couldn't see that anyone has said this yet - you need to wait for the loaf to be completely cool before you slice it, otherwise you get a crumbling soft mess.

I did this with 'too good to go' bakery bread. Got a month's worth, plus pastries, for a fiver.

CheesecakeandCrackers · 29/02/2024 22:01

I have 2 bread knives, one is fine the other is awful. It's not as simple as cheap/expensive. I hear you OP!

This is the current version of my much loved serrated carving knife I bought when I was cheffing, it's been in constant use for over 25 years and is the perfect knife for cutting bread - long, flexible and lightly serrated. Mine is a bit thinner in the blade and longer but I think it's an invaluable addition to any batterie de cuisine

It also depends on what sort of bread comes out of the breadmaker, so I get what the OP,is saying. We use different floors, which we gets from Cotswold, flour co. All the brown or crunchy type flavours make bread that is somewhat denser than the white flour loaves, and are easy to slice. The white flour makes a loaf that is very light, tall and 'fluffy', and very soft, so it's not the easiest to slice. We use an electric bread knife, but those boxes with slits might be a good buy for the OP. Stick with it, you can't beat homemade bread.
