British Food to Feed a German Visitor

Any inspiration please on what typically British dinners to cook for a German girl (early 20s - no food issues). She's never been to the UK before. I'm thinking a roast chicken dinner but other than that everything else we eat here is Spanish/Italian/Indian etc which would seem silly to cook.

Blahblahhaha · 29/02/2024 19:01

I think it’s good to show them the full range of what you eat - international and all! But here are some traditional ideas -

pie and mash
toad in the hole
shepherd’s pie/cottage pie
jacket potatoes with beans and cheese/tuna
fish and chips
sausage and mash
roast beef
traditional puddings - crumble etc

DottyLS · 29/02/2024 19:03

Curry is still good, not as widely available in Germany.
Toad in the hole, shepherds pie, chicken and leek pie

viques · 29/02/2024 19:03

A full English breakfast, or take her out to your nearest Caff for the full experience! German breakfasts are very different!

PuttingDownRoots · 29/02/2024 19:03

You need a Yorkshire pudding in there somewhere.

I'd probably avoid sausages as to be 100%honest... German ones are better.

Fish & Chips

Keroppi · 29/02/2024 19:04

indian or caribbean curries

Dontdoit1 · 29/02/2024 19:05

A proper afternoon tea

ConfusedScientist · 29/02/2024 19:09

Fish and chips
Indian curry (depending where she is from it is not easy to find)
a roast - ideally with Yorkshire puddings (never even seen them before I came to the UK!)
meaty pies

apple crumble
Custard
sticky toffee pudding
definitely scones with clotted cream

Crumpets for breakfast

A proper afternoon tea

Oh yes - that has to be on the list!

toastofthetown · 29/02/2024 19:17

The chicken pie on this link is great. Really rich and full of flavour, and very British.

turkeyboots · 29/02/2024 19:21

Cake and puddings.

Eton mess, puddings, trifle, scones, rock bun, fairy cake.

efeslight · 29/02/2024 19:25

Flapjack
Shepherds pie
Scones with jam and cream or an afternoon tea
English breakfast
Fish and chips
Beans on toast

Ellmau · 29/02/2024 19:25

Full English breakfast. You could do it as dinner.

Coronation chicken.

Fish and chips.

Greebosmum · 29/02/2024 19:41

A German military liaison officer I knew was obsessed with Branston Pickle. When he was posted home he introduced his replacement to it and filled a supermarket trolley with jars to take home. So maybe a cheese and pickle sandwich?

LIZS · 29/02/2024 19:44

Hotpot, toad in the hole, fish and chips, roast with yorkshire pud, shepherds pie, fish pie, pie, stew and dumplings

Datafan55 · 29/02/2024 19:47

Baked beans with stuff too!

PurBal · 29/02/2024 19:47

Ploughman’s with a pork pie

Crikeyalmighty · 29/02/2024 19:49

You know - if she's from the big city's you can get great Japanese, Chinese,Thai, Turkish etc- I've had all of them - depending where she lives it's not all sauerkraut and sausages - although admittedly it can feel like that away from the city's

PurBal · 29/02/2024 19:51

Full English

AdaColeman · 29/02/2024 19:57

Cullen skink
Gammon hock or joint with colcannon
Beef casserole with dumplings
Roast pork dinner with apple sauce
Egg and chips

Apple or rhubarb pie & custard
Baked egg custard tart
Rice pudding

And you absolutely must do a Black Forest Gateau!

tarheelbaby · 29/02/2024 20:02

deffo NOT sausages. Ages ago at New Year I hosted some Aussie friends who had spent Christmas with his long ago host family in Germany. Each night there was a different 'regional' sausage. Honestly, if you've had one nice banger, you've had them all.

pork pies - regular, cheese & pickle and Melton Mowbray
scotch eggs
Coleman's mustard
brown sauce
ppppenguins
stilton
extra mature/seriously strong cheddar
single malt whisky
mince pies
fruitcake/Christmas cake + brandy butter
Pimm's
Eton mess/Pavlova
apples - British varieties like cox's pippin or Braeburn

Im Scottish but I live in Germany and my partnering German. I cook a lot of British food at home for him and I would recommend:

Pies - shepherds pie/chicken pie/steak pie - pies aren't really a thing here and always seem to go down well!

Fish! So traditional fish and chips or any good quality fish - Germany is in many places far away from the sea so good quality fish is hard to come by.

Sewer clear of sausages and pork as both are eaten all the time here.

Or go for a fish pie if you really want to impress. I've been wanting to make one for ages but just can't get the ingredients here 🥹
