8 month old won't swallow solids

How can encourage my 8 month old to swallow solid or lumpier purées? He is fine on milk and yogurt but nothing else

Have you ever just spread it on the tray of the high chair for him to rub his hands into? Whatever is on the hands goes into the mouth so he will learn about textures and flavours himself.

You might need to just embrace the mess.

I have done this too. Whatever goes in his mouth he spits out. Not afraid of a little mess

And while dc is making messes, do you sit with a proper meal and eat? Small children need to have a proper family meal.

He’s only 8 months old, he may not be physically able to yet!

remember that ‘food is fun until they’re one’ - his calories and nutrition comes from milk for the whole of the first year, he doesn’t need to swallow anything yet. Exploring and tasting food is just fine, he’ll slowly start to eat more of it over the next 5 months - he has more than another half of his lifetime so far to get the hang of this.

kindly, take the pressure off yourself, sounds like you and he are doing great and exactly what you should both be doing

Then I would give shredded beef or chicken. And whole cooked lumps of vege like carrot or broccoli. DD did loathe potato so that was hard for me.

And no one yell at me please. I did it to my dd and gave her roast chicken leg bones and the bone from bbq’d steak. And yes, I did have to fish stuff out from the back of her throat but she didn’t die, she got texture, flavour and a smidge of nutrition. She’s was always mums little carnivore.

CadyEastman · 29/02/2024 06:47

What's he like with finger foods @Emily11b?

Veggiecurry · 29/02/2024 06:52

My DD is 7.5 months and weaning is a slow process for us. Some babies seem to take to it really well but others just seem to be more cautious or ambivalent about food. My DD enjoys toast and she’s had tiny tastes of other foods but she does spit most out. She likes the flavours but I don’t think she’s very good at eating them. I keep reminding myself it’s a skill and she’ll get there.

@Emily11b how are you getting on with weaning? I'm going through the same thing now with my 9 month old.

He is still the same, very good at feeding himself and chewing but then just spits it out

Where I work there is a 2. 5 year old who will only eat mush. Some parents don't even try. OP, keep up with the playing with food but do it when he's hungry. How about soft things like scrambled egg, he can pick it up and feed himself. Also mashed potato, cooked carrots etc.

Don't expect him to eat a steak but equally don't keep him on milky fluids.
