Urgent! Quick question about onions (photo attached)

I'm making a quick coq au vin. Recipe calls for "3 shallots, peeled and cut into 3cm rings". Shallots are not in the cupboard (suspect DH used the whole packet rather than half a packet for a recipe earlier in the week).

What would you sub with? 3 jumbo spring onions, bulb only, or one small red onion, plus one or two brown onions. Or even a good handful of frozen diced red onions? Or any other combination of the above?

It's just a regular family dinner, so doesn't need to be perfect. Photo is just to make you click ( but they are the actual onions in question!)

one red and one brown

Shallots are used in a recipe for their mild flavour so definitely don't use spring onions. I love onions so would happily use brown onions but if you want to keep the onion flavour mild, go for the red onion.

One red, one brown

BabaBarrio · 23/02/2024 18:12

Shallots are tiny, so I would use one brown onion.

One brown. Love the urgency!

SpringOfContentment · 23/02/2024 18:15

One brown.

DailyCake · 23/02/2024 18:18

Shallots come in various shapes and sizes. For a family meal - one red and one brown.

True, does the recipe call for a European or American shallot?

AdaColeman · 23/02/2024 18:25

Two brown onions.
I might also scatter a chopped spring onion or two as garnish when serving.

kitchenplans · 23/02/2024 18:31

The recipe calls for "banana shallots", but the Cherrypick website suggests Echalion shallots, which I bought, which are always pretty big but this pack has only 4 or 5 extra large in (hence why DH probably used them all, as he would have used the number specified, rather than adjusting because they were monster shallots,)

The urgency is to make sure there's enough vin left to cook the coq au vin!

Given your update, I'm going to modify my answer to 2 onions.
Personally, I'm not a fan of red onions leaching colour, so would use 2 brown. But any 2 onions will do.

Ooh fancy! I like your style.

Medium to large brown onion

kitchenplans · 23/02/2024 18:36

DH is now home and has taken over cooking. One red, one brown it is.

I'd have gone handful of frozen red 🤷🏻‍♀️ (onion not wine)

mynameiscalypso · 23/02/2024 18:39

I don't think I've ever had the right onions for a recipe. If it calls for onions, I only have shallots and vice versa.
