thanks for that - will try beer next time.

This is so not going to do us lunches all week. IT may not even cover tomorrow

I have to go and be alone with my ham for a while.

Beer as in bitter would be OK, I would think.

Beer as in lager probably wouldn't work!

WigWamBam · 23/03/2008 20:49

Or Guinness. Guinness might be nice.

TheArmadillo · 23/03/2008 20:49

7hr lamb sounds good - have you got recipe?

lager isn't beer - that is blasphemy in this house. Real Ale only here.

Though some of continental stuff can be nice. Especially Krick.

Don't bother. I cooked the Nigella one in 2 big bottles of coke and it was a waste of coke. The ham tastes exactly the same as if boiled in water with a bit of vinegar.

Utter bollocks. Hams are salty anyway which would remove any of the flavourings.

fishie · 23/03/2008 20:51

could be very nice with a wheat beer ooh or a fruit one, raspberry or cherry. i'd love to try that. (dh doesn't eat ham or indeed lamb grr)

TheArmadillo · 23/03/2008 20:52

I used nigella - but only used about 3/4 bottle of coke and used just plain honey instead of her topping.

NO one may doubt the ham.

The ham is good.

Real Ale only in this house too, Armadillo

I would think it would be nice - cooking beef in beer makes it nice and tender, so I would imagine gammon in beer would be good.

Although I'm veggie so only cook the stuff, don't eat it ...

TheArmadillo · 23/03/2008 20:57

sounds surprisingly easy.

Bet was a lovely texture.

Did it get rid of a lot of fat when you discard the stock? Dp won't usually eat lamb cos he doesn't like fatty meat.

I tried Jamie Oliver's balsamic roasted onions and potatoes the other day. There's another recipe whihc you don't even need half the liquid they recommend. Luckily someone warned me first. Was good though.

I think ham would be too salty to work with beer. The coke one is so nice because the sugar caramelises and the sweet/salty thing works. Do it as an experiement, though, I'd be interested to hear how it goes.

Ham in cider would work and could be very good.

TheArmadillo · 23/03/2008 20:59

yeah I was wondering whether it would work as well as beef in beer.

I didn't really use alcohol in cooking till recently. Cos I'm not a big drinker myself. But with all the alcohol burned off it's not bad.

I do like sticky red wine shallots alot now. And beef and beer pies/casseroles, adn red wine gravies.

And dp gets to finish off the bottle so he is happy.

I was thinking about cider.

Made a lot of jokes about 'ham in cider' but didn't get much further.

That might be one for holiday. We go to france and lots of cheap cider there. Self catering - would keep dp and his dsis happy.
