Help! My daughter won't eat breakfast

coffeetofunction · 16/02/2024 11:21

My youngest child is a nightmare when it comes to breakfast. She doesn't like milk, oats, toast or a cooked breakfast. I struggle to get her to eat anything before school. I would be so very grateful for any suggestions or recipes

Would she have a protein drink?

SgtJuneAckland · 16/02/2024 11:25

What does she eat for other meals? Food is food, it doesn't need to be porridge or a boiled egg

youhavenoidea123 · 16/02/2024 11:25

Or a breakfast muffin. There are lots of heathy ones online.

ohdamnitjanet · 16/02/2024 11:25

My son didn’t eat breakfast either. He’s now 6’2 and fine. Put a break time snack in her bag. She’ll be fine.

DontForgetWhereYouCameFrom · 16/02/2024 11:27

I hated breakfast and stopped eating it as a kid. I never ate until break time at school. It may just be her natural rhythm? Is she saying she's hungry?

Forgottenmyphone · 16/02/2024 11:28

Would she drink a smoothie? I used to make mine peanut butter, banana and toffee yogurt smoothies.
My DS doesn’t like toast, so if we run out of milk for cereal, he has jam sandwiches and a piece of fruit. He also likes omelettes.

GingerIsBest · 16/02/2024 11:29

how old is she? And what are the options for food at school? eg, secondary school - perhaps she has breakfast/early lunch at first break? I never liked breakfast and have never eaten it first thing but by about 10:00 am ravenous.

If she's at primary, that's possibly trickier BUT, they tend to have lunch very early so perhaps a packed lunch that's substantial?

Drinking something first thing is very very important though so if you can, compromise with a smoothie or similar?

Firstnews24 · 16/02/2024 11:30

how old?

Firstnews24 · 16/02/2024 11:30

and how does she eat generally and what’s her weight like?

GingerIsBest · 16/02/2024 11:30

Oh, and if she's hungry but just doesn't like breakfast food - give her something that's not breakfast? Lots of cultures eat savoury for breakfast.

Or muffins are a good choice. I have a chocolate muffin recipe that's very light and not sugar filled that is surprisingly popular around here at any time.

puncheur · 16/02/2024 11:32

If she’s not hungry she’s not hungry. Give her a snack to take to school in case she gets hungry before lunch time. Some people just aren’t hungry in the morning.

BoohooWoohoo · 16/02/2024 11:32

How old. My teens go to school without breakfast but eat “breakfast” at break instead.

Viewfrommyhouse · 16/02/2024 11:35

Ds never liked breakfast much. I don't either. I will never understand how someone can eat so soon after they wake up 🤢. A cup of tea is my breakfast. Ds will usually eat a chocolate chip brioche and a Haliborange multi vitamin. Seems to be fine on it! Basically, don't worry too much.

nopuppiesallowed · 16/02/2024 11:42

I still don't like eating breakfast. It seems to make me tired - as if all my energy is going into digesting the food. When my kids were young, if they didn't want breakfast, I used to make them carrot and apple juice with an added sprinkle of vitamin C. They'd drink that even if they didn't fancy anything else.

coffeetofunction · 16/02/2024 12:01

She only 9 yo. She has a school dinner and is always hungry when finishing school.

She gets hangry when hungry and it affects her concentration so both of these are a concern to me when she is at school. She also isn't the best on a morning and is a last minute Larry so we're always rushing.

I could pop something in her bag for breaks but what would be an option? She's not keen on fruit, I don't want to put a sugar snack in and space is limited as she is only allowed to take a book bag rather than an actual rucksack

Plain yoghurt and some low sugar cereal/ crunchy fruit? With tiny bit of honey if she wants?

In the summer, I have placed the yoghurt in the ice cream maker and had ‘ice cream’ for breakfast lol. It looks fun lol.

i also have done last nights apple crumble with yoghurt and because I have a toddler, it’s got barely any sugar. lol

or pre make waffles and pancakes and shove them in oven/toaster?

DontForgetWhereYouCameFrom · 16/02/2024 12:30

My DC take an oat bar, soreen bar, fruit bar or similar for snack usually, and a packet of crisps on a Friday as a treat.

If she has a healthy diet normally, a slightly sugary snack that she is happy to eat is better than nothing?

karmakameleon · 16/02/2024 12:44

I occasionally make morning glory muffins for myself to take to work and eat as a late breakfast. I’ve not tried this recipe but have it bookmarked for the future as it’s a simpler version.

Cheese and crackers?
Hummus and breadsticks?

DreamingInPhosphorescence · 16/02/2024 13:33

Mine haven’t eaten breakfast since they were toddlers, and one is now a teen. They take a snack for break time instead.

LightSwerve · 16/02/2024 13:35

Have you asked her what she'd like to eat?

Don't try to control her eating - your job is to offer a healthy diet, her job is to choose whether to eat it.

Bergmum · 16/02/2024 13:40

I make healthyish granola bars because that's all my 10 year old will eat.

4 cups oats
4 cups rice crispies
1/2 cup oil
1 cup honey
Mini choco chips

Mix and bake 25 mins on large oven tray

I've also sometimes added peanut butter, nuts and seeds

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 16/02/2024 13:41

The last minute Larry thing need to be managed by you - get her up half an hour earlier than she needs, have her ready for school except breakfast at least half an hour before leaving time. Some people need to be awake for a while before they eat. If she’s lazing about, getting dressed slowly etc, she might not have time to feel hungry.

what does she like to eat at other meals? (Before now my dd has eaten reheated cottage pie for breakfast.)

DinnaeFashYersel · 16/02/2024 13:52

Glass of milk and a yogurt

AmaryllisChorus · 16/02/2024 13:52

I'd try her with a small, not too thick milkshake: small banana, full cream milk, teaspoonful of peanut butter or small scoop of vanilla ice cream all blended up with some ice, maybe with some abidec vitamin drops added. Even if she just drinks a small glass of it, that's protein from the nut butter and milk and vitamins from the banana.

Then give her a cheese or ham bagel thin or a Belvita and an apple to take to school for later.
