Eton Mess - frozen fruit

Hi
I want to make an Eton Mess type thing but with the price of fresh berries as out of season I wondered about making a coulis from frozen berries.
I would serve with a big bowl of whipped cream and a bowl of small meringues for people to DIY.
Do you think this would work?

I think that sounds lovely. Much better idea than putting frozen berries in the meringue which will make it go soggy.

Definitely the coulis, frozen berries plonked in taste awful.

Undecided... do you think it needs a few?

Frozen raspberries, thawed on the side, are literally exactly like fresh (assuming you don't get ones that have been mushed up). I'd just thaw them and pop them in when ready to serve.

Agree frozen raspberries are actually really good

Firstnews24 · 15/02/2024 15:53

i think that no berries at all aside from those in the coulis would not be ideal - both presentation and, more importantly, taste

I think frozen raspberries are best out of season.

Another option we regularly do in winter is banoffee mess to avoid the issue with tasteless berries.

A yummy toffee pudding that needs no cooking - it's a cross between banoffee pie and Eton mess. From BBC Good Food magazine.

I like frozen fruit, but I bought raspberries from Waitrose that were incredibly sharp. I really don't want to add sugar.
Where can I get naturally sweet ones, please?

This doesn't answer your question but it feels worth mentioning. I went to a friend's house for dinner and she did an amazing low effort dessert. It was just a mix of frozen berries with a warm sauce made of white chocolate and cream poured over the top. It was absolutely delicious. The mixture of hot and cold and sharp and sweet was just perfection!

Thanks for all the replies... I was meant to make it tonight but due to unforeseen circumstances my get together had to be cancelled.
I will definitely be making when we reschedule.
