Mark's and Spencer Lasagne - to cook or not to cook?

Please no judgement, though I know that is quite hard to request on this website.
I bought an M&S lasagne a few months back and left it in the fridge until maybe the day before or day after it went off (can't remember exactly). The point is, it has been in the fridge and freezer for a long time since I bought it. I took it out of the freezer 2/3 days ago to defrost in the fridge, originally thinking it would be fine to eat. I've seen on the back of it that it must be eaten within one month of purchase, and as of right now it has been well over a few months. Is it safe for me to eat? I'm also hesitant as it has been in the fridge for a few days since being defrosted. I wouldn't normally be too bothered but I'm the maid of honour at a wedding this week and the last thing I need is food poisoning, as you can imagine.

Again, please no judgement I'm just querying.

Thank you

Given that you are maid of honor I wouldn't not eat it. I think of the freezing as stopping the clock on the going off but once defrosted it should have been eaten that day

Almost all food says to be eaten within a month of freezing but it’s fine if it’s longer.
Id eat it

I'd probably sniff it and if it smelled ok I would have it. I HATE food waste! Also, I am known in my family for being laissez faire about use by dates - my husband and daughter tell me off about it. I have had food poisoning once or twice in my life, though generally I think my constitution is pretty hardy! I do tend to think something like a lasagne will be rammed with salt and preservatives, so not that likely to go off quickly. And I'd worry more about chicken than beef.

Don't do it on my say so tho, I'm a bit of a dick!

I wouldn't think twice about it having been in the freezer more than a month, i'v had things at least a year. I'd be more wary that it was sat in the fridge for days.

I'd probably eat it though because I'm way less cautious with beef vs chicken.

I wouldn't probably fine but not worth the risk

ani4ani · 13/02/2024 20:02

Not if it's been more than 48 hrs defrosting.
I'll eat stuff well over a month old from the freezer, but I'll cook it within 24hrs of defrosting.

I generally don't pay much attention to use by dates but I wouldn't eat meat that had been defrosted for that long.

Sniff it and it it smells ok I'd eat it. It's beef not chicken.

Hibernatalie · 13/02/2024 20:05

For the sake of a Lasange I'd just bin it x

Thanks everyone for the helpful advice.

I decided to go against it and opted in tactfully persuading my husband to get a takeaway instead! He originally said no until the threat of food poisoning via lasagne was set upon him.

Thanks again, the help is really appreciated.
