Pasta use by dates

Clearing out cupboards as sick and bored. Pasta from late last year or eg October, would you use it now?

Spices/herbs, when to ditch?

I've eaten pasta much older than that OP, as a dried food there's virtually no risk it's only if it's very old it might taste a bit stale but October it'll be fine.
Herbs and spices just lose their flavour. If they've lost their aroma probably good to replace them.

I've eaten pasta ten years after its date! It'll be fine.

Blimey, short of it having things growing on it or full of weevils, I'd eat dried pasta for years.

Spices and herbs are all fine but... the potency may have disappeared. So it's worth, at the very list, a good sniff test - if you can still really smell whatever it's supposed to be, keep using them.

The pasta will still be fine to use. Use the herbs if they still have a strong aroma and are are not discoloured.

Eat it! We had some out of date dried noodles last night in a stir fry.

VisionsOfSplendour · 09/02/2024 13:28

Dried pasta and herbs?

Of course I'd eat them, who even checks the date on dried pasta?

Normal proviso that no viable mold etc

Decant everything into storage containers.

Then there are no best before dates to worry you!

Thanks all! I have eaten pasta older than this before but when it says egg lasagne like one I’ve got I’m wondering about it?

Herbs and spices normally chuck after 2-3 years.

I’m sick and bored and suddenly doubting myself. And want to do a spring clean of the cupboards!

It also comes from having an over zealous mother where anything past its use by and sell by date was binned. Whether in fridge or cupboards. I’m usually nothing like her.

Luckily she’s not come round this week as we have all been ill and I ignore her views on cleaning and housework (fairly different to mine!).

Pasta in general keeps forever - unlike rice or flour which can go rancid. Fresh egg pasta doesn't keep, which is why it needs refrigerating, but I wouldn't worry about the dried version.
