Raw chicken left out in car overnight

Hubby bought raw chicken yesterday evening to cook today but has just told me he has left it out in the car. Will it still be ok to cook or shall I bin it? I’m thinking it might be ok since the temperature outside has been very cold.

I’d bin it as you just don’t know.

What was the overnight temperature? How does it smell?

TyneTeas · 08/02/2024 07:26

Unless you are somewhere with overnight fridge temperature, I would bin

It was -4 overnight here last night. That’s colder than your fridge! I think it will be fine

Was it cold when you got it out of the car? How does it smell? If it smells ok it is fine to eat.

WaltzingWaters · 08/02/2024 07:27

Depends how cold it is where you are. Here it’s saying 12 degrees so I wouldn’t. If still under 5 degrees now at 7:30 probably okay.

AgnesX · 08/02/2024 07:28

Where do you live? If you're in Wales or Derbyshire it'll be fine😀

Seriously, do you have a car thermometer, what does it say?

Garlickit · 08/02/2024 07:28

If it felt cold when it came out of the car, I'd consider it safe. Last night was as cold as a fridge (or colder in some places).

Theraffarian · 08/02/2024 07:38

My car boot would have been lower than fridge temperature here , so if I’d left it there overnight I would still use it . Depends on the temperature where you are .

idontlikealdi · 08/02/2024 08:07

Depends how cold it was wheee you are

dementedpixie · 08/02/2024 08:23

Its going to be a high of 3⁰C where I am today and it was in the minus figures overnight so I'd need to defrost chicken if it was left outside overnight! Totally depends on the temperature where you are

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/02/2024 08:24

Does it smell fresh?

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/02/2024 08:25

(Been putting Turkey in an outbuilding on Christmas Eve for 30 years, never have enough fridge space. We’re all still alive)

NoHappyEverAfter · 08/02/2024 08:26

Not a chance would I risk eating that!
Do come back and report the results if you do.

ohthehokey · 08/02/2024 08:51

If the outside temp was less than 4 degrees it will be fine.

MaggieFS · 08/02/2024 08:53

Depends where you live. In the SE it's far too warm.

Mitherations · 08/02/2024 08:57

It depends on the temperature where you live last night. The fridge isn't a magic box that kills germs, and if the car has been at the same temperature or less than your fridge was then you're fine.

This 100%

Pickledperr · 08/02/2024 11:11

It depends on a few things. How long was it in the car before he got home? The car would have been heated to say 20 and it would t have cooled that fast so it more likely sat above 5 for a few hours so I'd bin it.

dementedpixie · 08/02/2024 13:16

If it was in the boot then that wouldn't be getting heated like the rest of the car.
