Really good supermarket pasta bake sauce?

doodlepants · 29/01/2024 06:21

Can anyone recommend a good supermarket pasta bake sauce? Something without meat? All the ones we've had recently have been very vinegary and off putting. But they're such an easy meal! Alternatively, any recipe ideas for a pasta bake sauce?

Thanks!

We just use mushroom soup. Tin of tuna, some sweetcorn, cheese stirred in and more cheese on top, bake

At the risk of being a total bore, I honestly don't think you can substitute making your own, perhaps a big batch, which you can then freeze. Sorry, I know that's not helpful, I just haven't found one in the jar that can come close, They all seem to have something in them that just makes them not taste quite as natural if that makes sense!

I did used to particularly, enjoy Loyd, Grossman, tomato and basil, but I don't know if that helps!

Not a supermarket but I could buy a nice jar of very fresh tasting tomato sauce from the local health food shop. I think it was Meridien.

Make your own!

500ml passata, 1- 2 teaspoons of tomato puree, some oil (I use olive for the taste), a splash of cream and herbs & spices to taste. Mix well.

Boil pasta and place on baking dish, mix with sauce, sprinkle with cheese and bake for 15-30 minutes at 180°C.

Obviously this can be upgraded with fryed/ tinned veg or mushrooms.

Not at all @ManchesterBea, I'm finding all the pasta bake sauces I buy so meh at the moment!

Thanks all, the mushroom soup idea is golden actually! @Jeffjefftyjeff

@DancefloorAcrobatics this sounds delicious and I'm going to try it.

Campbells condensed mushroom soup and fill tin up with milk/add that. Yummy! Especially with bacon lardons, mushrooms, frozen peas added too.

My mum used to do this with ready salted crisps under the cheese. 🤮

Just chop and roast a load of Mediterranean veg (I usually use peppers, courgettes, aubergine, red onion, mushrooms) with plenty of garlic, olive oil, salt and pepper, chuck a carton of passata in after about half an hour and a pinch of sugar, cook for another 10-15 minutes, add oregano, lightly cooked pasta, cheese on top and breadcrumbs if you want and either put it back in a hot oven or under the grill. You can add tuna or left over cooked chicken to the mix of you have any or cooked bacon lardons etc.
If you make a massive batch of the basic sauce you can blitz half and it freezes well in those silicone ice cube trays and is then a quick pasta stir through sauce for another time.

The Aldi mascarpone and tomato one is nice if you want a cupboard stock filler. I usually add bacon.

Sauces, as everyone else seems to be saying, are quite easy to make but sometimes you've not got passata/pure/garlic, etc.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 29/01/2024 22:34

Can chopped tomatoes mixed with a can of ratatouille. Some hot water/stock if it needs to be more liquid so the pasta cooks. Dollop of cream cheese if you like it creamy.

I found the Heinz Mascarpone and tomato sauce quite nice

I second this. Much better than the Heinz one.

I fry some onions with chorizo (sometimes chicken) and then add a chopped red pepper. Add the cooked pasta then the sauce. Either have it like that or put it into a Pyrex, top with cheese and oven for 10-15 mins.

This is the one my daughter likes

I have just remembered one I used to make years ago and I'm going to do it again.
Basically fry off cut up chicken breast with bacon and mushrooms
Add peppers and whatever veg you've got in the fridge
Cook the pasta
Two tins of soup, one cream of chicken, one cream of mushroom. Mix together in a measuring jug with a load of chopped chives. Then just mix it all together and bake with cheese on top

Yes same, it's the only one I buy. I make my own sometimes but it's handy to have some in the cupboard.,

QueenOfHiraeth · 29/01/2024 23:36

Isn't the Heinz tomato and mascarpone the only one that comes out as non-processed? Haven't tasted it though!
I buy the Costco Kirkland Marinara sauce which is just tomato, olive oil, garlic and herbs and tastes good

MintTwirl · 30/01/2024 15:34

I always keep a jar of Sainsburys creamy tomato pasta bake in the cupboard for an easy dinner. Then I Chuck in any random veg/meat we have leftover.
