Slim and active DS8 - breakfast ideas

DS8 likes to play sport. He is a slim build (family genes) and generally eats well.

I'm thinking about breakfast. He doesn't like hot food first thing. Wants cereal with peanut butter and jam on toast.

He will occasionally east a little scrambled egg on toast but no baked beans/meat first thing.

I do pancakes and he likes those.

It seems it's all carbs and sugar til lunchtime. He doesn't like plain chicken or sausages at main meals and he definitely likes plain carbs. He does eat veg. Only smoothies for fruit. His brother is all about the meat.

Should I be concerned?

He loves peanut butter so I buy the whole foods one. Is that enough protein at breakfast?

Would he eat overnight oats? Oats plain yoghurt frozen berries and honey. Mix it up the night before and it’s ready the next morning.

I’m not sure why you think you need to worry about a kid that likes peanut butter on toast for breakfast. It seems perfectly healthy to me, especially if the rest of his diet is good.

Me too. Give him bread with loads of seeds in if he is hungry.

Would he accept french toast as not a hot breakfast?

I think with kids you need to think about their meals across the week not just in isolation. So as long as he gets plenty of protein generally then these breakfasts are fine. He's eating something which is good

That sounds fine. You could try a bagel with cream cheese. Or even something like a cheese and tomato sandwich.

When I did slimming world they had a disgusting recipe with oats, muller light yoghurt and eggs made into muffins. My DS doesn't eat cereal, but I adapted these with plain whole fat yoghurt, frozen fruit and a bit of honey to sweeten, and a bit of baking powder. I bake a batch freeze them and defrost one in the microwave in the morning. He also likes overnight oats and French toast.

I used to give mine bagels - they're slightly more filling than a slice of toast & you can vary the topping: cream cheese (& smoked salmon), marmite, fruit spread, cheese, sausage, scrambled egg...

Wish people would stop with the protein obsession on here. Most people in the UK get more than enough protein. It isn't something that needs to be served at every meal and you need much less than you would think. AN 8 year old that plays a bit of sport isn't really going to need any more than average.

@rainbowunicorn agreed - I think it comes from people's obsession with low carb diets to lose weight? An 8 year old needs about 20g of protein a day which is equivalent to one small chicken breast. 2 slices of peanut butter toast is about 10-15..

Exactly, to be fair it is only on here that people seem obsessed with protein at every meal. I think a lot of the problem is people read something that tbey don't really understand and then just parrot it on every thread about food without any consideration for the fact that people have different needs depending on age, health etc.

Just to add to this - we do banana pancakes quite often because the kids like them as they're "sweet" but they pack some variety in.

It's about 5 heaped dessert spoons of self raising flour. Then I add 2 eggs and enough oat milk to create a smooth, very thick batter. A teaspoon of vanilla essence and then two mashed bananas.

A friend does hers with coconut flour which I can see being a winner if like that taste. And I know a woman who does hers with oats but I am not convinced my kids would like the texture of that.
