Unexpected meals?

Hi all,

A question about eating healthily. I won't put this in the diet group as I want advice relating to what the 'norm' is, rather than seeing this as a diet.

Context.. you go out for a daytime, you take lunch but unfortunately your drink leaks and ruins everything! Forced to eat lunch out. Options are limited, so end up choosing something that is quite high in calories. When you get home, do you still have dinner in the evening? Those people with a healthy relationship with food, what do you do? What is the 'norm'?

Thanks for the advice in advance!

I'd cook the same - it would already have defrosted - but would probably eat less and have the remainder for the following day's lunch.

Or ds will eat anything going spare. He's at that age 😀

I’d do the opposite - I’d think fuck it, I’ve had an unhealthy lunch, might as well eat whatever I want now, and would eat a terribly unhealthy dinner and a shed load of chocolate. Obviously I am in no way normal and have a terrible relationship with food! I am doing everything I can to change things this year and get out of this mindset. I wish you all the best OP.

I’d probably have a sandwich or something on toast in the evening if I’d had a main meal at lunchtime. However a kids portion isn’t a main meal!
don’t beat yourself up about it, the omelette idea is good, or something like beans on toast?

Might not been a main meal but its still high fat and high calories. A lot of fat tbh

Op if I had that at lunchtime, and yes a childs happy meal size meal or locally they the do 3 strippers and chips and call it a pensioners meal :) , I would have a veg heavy meal in the evening

Today for example Ive had a really high fat high carb lunch, cos its what I really fancied, so tonight its beef casserole with a tonne of veg in the casserole ( root veg ) served with a side of green veg - broccoli and peas in this case and just plain boiled potatoes soft enough to mash into the gravy :)

I would eat something large or small according to whether I was hungry, and after a child’s portion with no veg or fibre I’d be ravenous. I do try to get my five a day so would think about that for dinner choices, fruit etc, but the lunchtime calorie count wouldn’t be a factor.

@Fireplacedreamer since you've struggled with eating in the past, how about a mindset shift away from 'what can I allow myself to eat' to - 'what do I need to eat this evening to make today's overall intake more balanced?' eg I haven't had enough protein or fruit and veg so this evening's meal should heavily feature that.

Essie274 · 21/01/2024 19:54

I would. The size of the evening meal would depend on how hungry I am. A sandwich, cheese and crackers, fruit and yoghurt or bowl of soup if not particularly hungry, something more if not. Surely that is everyone's answer?

I am fat though lol

I would adjust in the evening. I'm veggie and my family are not, so I quite often eat a different meal to them.

But - if I have to buy lunch, I tend to go for sushi, or a jacket spud with beans, no butter to keep the calories down.

Yes, of course. Food shouldn't be punishment. If I had the equivalent of a 'pub meal' which is what I'd consider chicken strips, chips and a coke, I'd probably feel a bit blergh as have GI issues and that wouldn't be the best meal for me.

But yes, I'd have my normal planned dinner whatever that was going to be. If it was similarly 'beige-y' type food, I'd try to add in a bit more fresh veg and eat some fruit so I wouldn't feel ill (my GI condition means too much fried food gives me tummy issues). I'm not a calorie counter though and don't diet. I eat what I enjoy and what will make me feel well.
